Why is race even an issue in this case? Am I going to have to get all my news from NPR?

I woke up to a news story on AOL this morning about a teenage kid who went to the wrong house and got shot by an old man answering the door. The story did not have any information about what the old man or kid said before the old man discharged his weapon. Obviously it's a tragedy, and probably the result of mistaken house/mistaken identity. Thankfully, the kid is expected to survive, and the old man is OK, and has not been "taken into custody." But the news article I read DID mention the race of the kid and the old man. Why is race even relevant? Any interaction between two people involves much more than their respective races. Does race "sell"? If so, are news sources (on both the Left and the Right--forget you political predispositions for a moment) making money by creating political and racial divides? Hmm.
The shooting of a Black teenager who rang the wrong doorbell after mistaking the residence for one a block over has sparked outrage on social media, a weekend protest and calls for the shooter’s arrest.

Well I think that the hate mongers would make race an issue. Maybe it was an issue. Who knows. Could the shooter have known the young guy was black? Anyway, another tragic shooting.

The prosecuting attorney for the county this happened in said that there was a racial component to the case at a conference earlier today. From what's been reported so far the shooter fired at the victim through a glass door, so I think it's likely he did know the victim was Black before he did it.

@yukimori Doesn't mean race was an issue. Who cares anyway. Until they change the whole system this will happen time and time again

I think the media likes to create problems for us instead of letting us decide just how stupid that old man was for shooting a kid. How the hell did that old man know who that was before he answered is what I want to know and then why couldn't that stupid old man ask 'who is it' before answering.

I have done the same thing. The media exaggerates everything then to make matters worse they distort it and they do it to create stories that otherwise would not happen.

What I know from the alternate media reports on the internet is that the media likes to paint the portrait of White people shooting Black persons out if racism attitudes that is being crammed down our throat to keep the races to kept separate.

Honestly, in many shootings, at least here in the midwest, race is often an issue. I read this one awhile ago---

I hate the fact that news or other people would disclose this race that race. What has race got to do with a mistake or crime committed? Whatever race one is, when one is on the wrong, they should be charged accordingly, human dignity is a component for all humans it has no race priority whatsoever. This is sad news.

I agree entirely. But in the US, the news media seems to have a "divide and conquer" attitude about race.

At least they reported that much. I still haven't seen an official explanation of what caused the 7 hour standoff across the street a few weeks ago.

So I look out the front and there's at least a dozen swat guys out there ordering people out of #11 across the street, both ends of the street are blocked off,...

It's sad that the land of liberty and democracy I looked up to as a kid is still now battling discrimination. I presume discrimination will always exist anywhere in the world. Especially discrimination based on race. No offense meant. I'm just sad.

I do not believe it was a racist thing, now everything becomes a matter of racism. Anyway the man should be in jail, there was no need to kill.

I think this thing has increasingly got popularity nowadays. The news reporters use the sensitive parameters to make the news articles more appealing and catchy by seizing the races, political ideologies among other factors to make the news more marketable whenever unprecedented incidents like this happen.
