A brown falcon - I think!

While at the Small Farm Field Day recently, we came across a tent run by a group which rescues, treats and rehabilitates birds of prey. They had a wedge-tailed eagle on display, several owls and the smaller bird that you can see in the photo. My first thought was that is was what we used to call a ‘chicken hawk’ but it seems this is a common term applied to a few species of smaller birds of prey. After researching the size and colouring, I think is a brown falcon. These are found throughout Australia and vary in colour from dark to light brown with lighter underparts. That’s ‘underparts’, not ‘underpants’! They feed on small mammals, reptiles and insects. They sometimes use another bird’s old stick nest but may also build their own. The males are smaller than the females. The handlers were wearing heavy gloves which you can just see in the photo. I’m sure they need them. I might be missing for a few days now as we're going to another horse endurance ride. This one is about six hours drive away so we're going a day early and camping in the caravan along the way. We used to live in the town we're heading and we're hoping to catch up with a few of our old friends there before the ride..

I'm glad you aren't going around and checking to see what color their underpants are, Judy... I'm sure that would make the poor birdies blush! I hope you and Vince have a good trip and enjoy visiting with your old friends. Have a good time taking photos at the trail ride... I know you'll share some good photos when you come back.

That does look like a falcon. What a beautiful bird. I read the CJ Box Joe Pickett series and he has a friend in there that is a falconer. I can't see a falcon without thinking of the books. Enjoy your endurance ride trip. Safe travels.

@JudyEv I'm glad you had a nice safe trip. I'm leaving the RV park I'm in and heading back to the coastal area. On the 13th, I'll finally head back up to Washington visiting museums, wineries, farms and then meet with my son at a river camp in the Cascades. After, I'll be home until a host position in August.

@noni1959 I hope you have a wonderful time. We have another endurance ride in about ten days then we are house-sitting a property for a week. I'm looking forward to that.

It could be a young brown falcon or a saker falcon. You will be missed Judy, enjoy your horse endurance ride.

It does look like a falcon. I can see why they wear gloves. They don’t want their fingers ripped apart. You guys enjoy the endurance ride.Hope you see your friends.

I thought this might have been a kestrel but research says it's a falcon. I hope they're right, not that it's a big deal if it isn't. lol

Such a beautiful raptor. I have never seen one up close but what I have read about raptors is they usually have extremely sharp claws and I have read that the talons of a bald eagle can rip a persons arm to pieces if they had the desire to do so. Does Australia get bald eagles?

We don't have bald eagles but the wedge-tailed is our equivalent and the largest of our raptors.
