College Football Fans: who should play OSU?

United States
December 1, 2006 7:40pm CST
Hello. I'm a Florida Gators fan (I was born in Tampa) but I live in Ohio now. Since Ohio State has already sealed a spot in the national championship game for college football, the question has become "Who will they play?" The top candidates are Southern Cal (USC), Michigan and Florida (in that order). Which do you think should (or would you like to see) play OSU? Also, don't count out Boise State. They are the only team (other than OSU) that finished with an undefeated season. Should they get a shot at OSU, even though their schedule wasn't the toughest.

Being a Michigan fan, I'm more inclined to say Michigan, but they had their chance. And sadly, they didn't pull through. So I would have to say USC has earned it. A couple years ago the Utah Utes had an undefeated season and they made it into a bowl (I don't remember which one) but they were matched up against a team that they easily slottered. I wish they would make the games more challenging and GOOD games for the bowls. It's frustrating when there could be a great game, but they settle for "ok". I don't know if this makes sense to the rest of you, but I just expect more from the "bowl" games.

Couldn't agree with you more on the "secondary" bowl games which are usually arranged by invitation only.

Buckeyes - Buckeyes are going to win the National Title no matter who they play.
As a huge Buckeye fan I think we will end up playing USC, There has been a lot of talk about playing Michigan again but I dont think it will happen. Its Either going to be them or Florida and whoever it is its going to be one heck of a game.

Florida Gators - cartoon of the Florida Gators
I used to be a big college football fan (Maryland Terrapins..my alma mater) but now that I live in Portugal the only news I have is on CNN. As for your question, I'm for the little guys and I would like to see Boise State have a chance. On the other hand being an "easterner" (Maine) I would have to go for the gators. They have always put on a good show in the past. Other than the above all I can say is good luck.....Goooooooooooooo Gators.

Hey. Big Gator fan here too. I grew up in Gainesville. Actually played park ball with Terry Jackson and Travis McGriff. That said, I'll try to explain this with as little bias as possible. If you go by who has the best chance against OSU, it's USC. I just don't think Florida's offense is dynamic enough YET, to cope with OSU. Floriday has earned it though. Their only loss is against a top 15 team while USC lost to a crummy Oregon State. Florida has the number 1 toughest schedule and USC is right on their heels so that is a wash. Florida has played better quality opponents and won. Who cares if their didn't blow people out. Michingan should not have a 2nd shot. I thought we cleared this up when Nebraska made it to the National Championship game without winning their conference. Fact is Everyone but the Big Ten and Pac Ten sends their conference championship game winner yet they don't even have a championship game. Michigan had their shot and didn't win their conference. That's it. They should not be allowed to have a "re-do" I really hope USC loses and Florida wins so we can hear the asanine arguments that Michigan should go and everyone will be outraged and maybe a serious inquiry can be made into a playoff system. GO GATORS AND BRUINS!

I agree that I'm worried Florida won't be able to compete with OSU. However, I do think they have the ability to compete offensively. I think Urban Meyer has got a pretty good knack for molding an offensive plan for each of his opponents. And I'm sure that the defense could hold up in most games, though they've never faced the likes of Troy Smith and Ted Ginn. Personally, my major concern is on special teams...more directly our kicking game. If we have an Achilles Heel, Hetland is it. It's odd that we can find such success with a two quarterback system, but we can't find a way to get three points when we need it. I agree with your arguments for the other teams that are in contention. USC lost to Oregon State. Unfortunately, voters see the Notre Dame game as their saving grace. Plus, it seems that college football will always give USC the benefit of the doubt. So, for them to be out of the picture (despite their loss to a less than desirable team) they have to lose to UCLA. As for Michigan, I can't even believe that this is an issue. Though it does show an obvious flaw with the BCS system. I think the conference title should be a necessity before you are even considered for the national championship. The national championship game is not intended to host a rematch of a conference championship. If Michigan and OSU weren't in the same conference and we were in the same position, then I would say let it be (just so long as both teams deserved to be there). One thing's for sure, I don't think Lloyd Carr should look forward to a rematch, for fear of losing to Ohio State again. Despite his success at Michigan, every loss to OSU comes as a huge strike against him. Of course, this is under my estimation that the first game shouldn't have been so close. It certainly wasn't an indicator of how the teams compare. OSU is FAR better than Michigan.

Your worried that flordia can't compete with OSU? The SEC is the toughest conference out of all of them and they only lost one game and almost won that one. Michigan is better then OSU and given a rematch i bet they would win. OSU is offense Michigan is defense that is why there game was so close they are matched up. The only reason OSU won was because of troy smith. He is what vincent young was last year at this point. I think flordia could stick it to any team in the nation right now at this point. People don't understand how tough the teams dounsouth are down here football is a true passion. USC doesn't deserve it over flordia and i'll say it a thousand times. This is why they need a playoff because florida and michigan would show that USC isn't better then them.

Well, Saturday sure changed a lot of things and we will soon see how Florida and OSU matchup. It's not that I doubt Florida, but I've seen what Troy Smith and Ted Ginn can do, and that's score quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried it, but they have to remember that Florida's defense is quicker than anyone they've played to date. My other concerns for Florida are Chris Leak and our kicking game. I don't doubt that Chris Leak will rise to the occasion, but he has a reputation for shooting himself in the foot with turnovers. He would make it a lot easier on himself if he could change that. As for the kicking game... well, Hetland hit his first 30+ field goal on Saturday (At the end of the season) on his birthday. I hope that wasn't a rarity, but instead is a sign of things to come. We'll see on January 8.

I think at this point is has to be USC after they basically tore about Notre Dame which is alway's the media's darling to try to put into a national championship game. Brady Quinn is overrated, and Notre Dame's struggles have proven it.

well, the system in place for deciding who should play in the national championship is skewed (to put it lightly) so it actually raises a lot of discussion among sports writers, athletes, coaches, and fans. this topic was started to hear what fans of college football think about the situation this year (which is especially interesting).

That's funny. I live in Seminole, FL now but I was born in Ohio. I did a semester at UF... I like the Gators, but I like Ohio State better. They are going to win! I would have liked to see USC play. I'm a big fan of them. So sad to see Regie Bush leave.

Yeah, I'm so tired of all the trash talk I've heard in the past month. I have to admit, I got caught up in it. But now, I'm content with letting the teams resolve it on the field (like it should be done). It happened today as Michigan showed why the BCS voters didn't pick them for a rematch against OSU. Final score in this year's Rose Bowl: USC 32, Michigan 18. It should also be noted that Michigan scored it's final touchdown with just a minute left in the game, long after it had already been decided. Go Gators!

I think a rematch with Michigan would be a helluva game but at the same time i think another team deserves a shot i would say USC as long as they win out... im glad Rutgers lost too cuz i think that would have been a blowout if they went undefeated

I would say USC, especially if they win today. If USC loses today, I'd probably still give USC the nod, though it would be a very close call between them and Mich. As a lifelong OSU fan, I wouldn't mind seeing a rematch with Michigan for the national title. It's such a great rivalry, and that last game was incredible.

You would still take USC if they lose today??? In what world does that seem right? Florida should move inplace if USC loses today.

Hello. Its all about the pecking order... especially the way the system (bowls with NO playoff) is set up. Like several have stated already. Michigan LOST to OSU (whether by 1 pt or 100 pts) they SHOULD have DROPPED further down in the polls (5th or 6th) instead of NO movement at all! Next in line... USC. If they win out, there you go... If they lose, NEXT... Florida? So on and so forth. Interesting Nebraska example surfaced. True they did not even play in their conference championship that season... neither does PAC 10 or BIG 10 teams (among others) however ONCE AGAIN the POLL PECKING order came in effect. If you remember (with 2-3 weeks out) there were 6 or 7 teams that FELL OUT (LOST) of contention late (including Tennessee and Florida) that season... The Huskers rankings topped out and they were selected to play (NEXT) in the POLL PECKING ORDER vs Miami. It's aready been announced that the winner (OU or Nebraska) of the BIG 12 Championship game (DEC 2nd) in KC will automatically go on to play Boise State in the BCS Fiesta Bowl

I believe after watching the boise state vs oklahoma game some of us have to be more convinced that a playoff system or some type of tournament system needs to be in place. I think time and time again from one sport to another now with college basketball and college football these "small" time schools such as wake forest, boise state, george mason, etc all deserve the opportunity to prove themselves in the bigger games. Once again we may still end up with an undefeated team in college football that isn't crowned the champion. I wonder if other countries around the world don't laugh at this ridiculous system we have in place for the magnificent sport of college football we have in the U.S.

It does seem a little unfair doesn't it? Even as a Gators fan, I am curious to see how Boise State would have handled Ohio State. It would have been interesting for sure. But, the fact is that the WAC schedule isn't exactly the toughest schedule as far as conferences go. It is perhaps one of the farthest from, or would be if it weren't for Conference USA. So, the way a WAC team proves itself is to schedule some tough non-conference games. Non-conference games against Utah, Sacramento State, Oregon State, and Wyoming don't exactly impress, especially when OSU played Texas and Michigan and Florida survived a brutal SEC schedule with one loss. Is it fair? On paper it looks that way, but I doubt Boise State could hold their own against OSU or Florida. But then again, in college football anything can happen. After all, Boise State came back to beat Oklahoma. Admittedly, if Florida was excluded from the national championship, I'd have been okay with seeing the battle of the unbeatens. But at the same time, I want the Gators to be Ohio State. Anything can happen.

The Gators are the appropriate opponent for OSU. Fear not Gator fans, we will not only be competitive but I feel a victory.

I like how you said that about "feel(ing) a victory" because I too have this feeling about that happening. They've got a couple things going their way and then a few coincidences that I'll go over right now. First, it's been 10 years since the Gators last won the national championship in football. And this is the 100th year of Florida football. How awesome would that be to win it on such a milestone? Plus, there are the similarities between Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer. Both are Ohio boys that have been abundantly successful in the college game, only to move onto a larger school and continue their success. Tressel won a National Championship at Ohio State in his second year of coaching there, this is Urban Meyer's second year. Speaking of that OSU national championship, the Buckeyes played a team that was coming into the game with the longest winning streak in the country (Miami). OSU currently has the longest win streak. In that game, Miami was heavily favored to win and the Buckeyes barely survived their season with several close wins. The same is true this season, with OSU as the heavy favorite and Florida scrapping their way through their tough SEC schedule. If you don't know the outcome, Ohio State won that game in OT. Another thing that amazes me is the unexplicable number of oddities (the one that sticks out the most in my mind is how UCLA defeated USC) that have occurred this season that have led to a Gators invitation to the national championship. Divine intervention? I say yes, if there is such a thing in college football. There were other things that I found similiar that I cannot remember because someone called while I was in the middle of writing this. But I agree, my gut instinct tells me that Florida will win, but I certainly don't want to get over-confident (or jinx them...i'm superstitious when it comes to football). Plus, as I live in Ohio and I've already begun hearing the insults that they normally only reserve for Michigan fans, I don't want to be forced to eat crow should the Gators lose. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind serving some crow for most of the people I work with next Tuesday when we come in. But we'll see.

Gators are the only team that earned it expecially after Michigan proved USC is better than them.

That is completely true. I had to laugh while I watched that game because I know several Michigan fans that were very rude to me when they found out that my team jumped theirs to play in the national championship. I just love when other people have to "eat crow."

My choice is the Cal Bears...but that dream has been shot. Realistically, I would like to see USC and a close second goes to Michigan. Ohio state has been one of my favorite college football teams for 20+ years so regardless of who they will play for the National Championship....I hope the are victorious.

right now we all know that florida would play ohio state for all the marbles. i think florida has a good chance of beating ohio state for the national championship. florida plays in the sec and it is considered the toughest division in all of college football. if ohio state played florida's schedule would they go 11-1 like what florida did. i doubt it. ohio state would face auburn, arkansas, tenessee, georgia all top 25 teams. not to demean ohio state's schedule but if florida were playing the big ten they could have gone undefeated as well. and do not discount urban meyer. he has 4 weeks to prepare and i betcha he has tricks up his sleeve when they play.

I agree that the SEC is the toughest conference in college football THIS YEAR. And while I will also agree that is has always been one of the toughest conferences in football, I don't believe that it is ALWAYS the toughest. It varies from year to year. Sometimes, even the Big Ten might be considered the toughest conference. You are right about Urban Meyer, but I think the same thing can be said about Jim Tressel. I think it's up in the air, but I'm still gonna say: Go Gators!
