Citizenship, birthright, Vivek Ramaswamy ..and illegality

Vivek Ramaswamy, the US Republican Senator candidate, very simplistically suggested that no citizenship be given because of birth to illegal immigrants. If only the issue could be solved as easily. An illegal immigrant arrives for better prospects. What choices are there? Back home, there is likelihood of ending up in the clutches of drug cartels. Not that they may not be already serving those cartels. But the issue is, you corner a cat, it is going to become fierce. Terrorism and all that. The problem is deeper. It has something to do with population growth - no family planning methods, but I won't get into that. Lack of employment because of new technologies and machines taking over from humans. Yeah...that is a cause too. Many jobs don't pay enough either. I would mandate that illegal immigrants and their children should take up jobs that the regular citizens are unwilling to do. This is for 100 years before becoming naturalized. It is a risky statement he dared to utter.

I don't know what the solution is for illegal immigrants. We can only support so many people in this country. Granted, there are many jobs that Americans don't want to do which is why so many Mexicans work the fields in nurseries and orchards. Hope you have a great weekend.

@LindaOHio I agree about that. And immigration is something only to be expected. But fairness too should be there, isn't it? You paid taxes, your father paid taxes, your forefathers. Think of era from the time you all received independence. All those taxes helped to make America as good as it is today. Others should contribute, in someway, isn't it?

@LindaOHio Its great point you make many do not want those jobs, I would do it if paid a living wage but none do but why America will always have a immigration problem. Those countries must be really bad if they coming here with everything they know. You will be exploited abused and cannot earn a living wage. Its amazing they still keep coming. What are these countries doing?

@crossbones27 Many countries do not have the freedoms we have in this country, some countries have abject poverty and some are in conflict. The United States seems golden to these people.

He is a candidate for the Republican Presidential nomination, and he seems to have little grasp of foreigh affairs, plus he is a Trump lover. I don't like him.

@AmbiePam I like Trump too - because he is a blond and blonds tend to put their foot in their mouth? LOL Kidding... Trump and others do have their reasons. It is difficult for people to plan for many mouths. Imagine lots of guests dropping in suddenly at lunch time, and saying we didn't have food. Would you be able to prepare meal for all of them at such short notice? No amount of taxes can help to accommodate such sudden influx of immigrants. And taxes do make things expensive for others who have been honest taxpayers. And you and your parents and forefathers have paid taxes across the years to make America what it is today. Sharing it easily is not just and fair. Others must contribute. By giving birthright citizenship ...there is a degree of shrewdness used to eat into your pie. I do understand that. But this guy himself is an immigrant's child, right? So what if legal. LOL There is a set off ... kinda ... crimes against the US vs. benefits to immigrants If the children are sent back, they will not be able to adjust to old environment because they are not familiar with anything back home. They will take easily to crimes and that anger would be directed against the US. How safe would the US be? Vs...costs to imprison them, fight cases in courts, give them healthcare, and let them eat into pie of fellow citizens... Not easy. If I buy a house for 100000 USD ..I would expect the immigrants to buy it for at least 150000. There should be immigrant tax. They and their kids should not be allowed to take up higher end jobs in the country for about 100 years thereby keeping inflation low for entire nation. It would be indirect way to collect taxes or premium for citizenship from them. Trump was a blond so he thought of a wall. Walls don't stop illegal immigrants. You have sea cost, you can have tunnels, and then there are airways. Blond talk. LOL

At one time, and perhaps it is still a problem, illegals would come here just to give birth and have their child be a citizen. It's wrong. It shouldn't happen. And we cannot accomodate the world's people. Countries suffering economically should do more to better their own citizen's lives and not burden the United States with their problems.

I agree about this. Though religion is the culprit that makes the mess of population sizes and consequent competition for limited resources. There are plenty of problems of being overpopulated. Surprisingly many do. I do understand that America is finding it difficult to offer all those social securities it has in place to illegal immigrants simply because it is difficult to cook for a large number of guests arriving suddenly. No amount of planning can help. Therefore, I would have identified jobs for which there are no takers and get illegal immigrants to take up those jobs only. It would kinda ...fine you can avail the benefits this country offers, provided you work for it. Gill, we all pay taxes. They go into building bridges, roads, railways, etc. If a newcomer comes and enjoys the same facilities and yet takes up jobs that I aspire for; there is something wrong in the way we plan this.

@crossbones27 I see. There is cultural benefit too. We Indians are fine with sharing accommodation with our siblings and parents. In fact, when I was a kid, I lived with one of the family friends during holidays. We were almost 11 members living in 700 sft house. One wash room, but separated into toilet and bathing area, and a wash basin so three of us could be using it at one time without seeing each other. LOL As to sleeping... on the floor we would put those mattresses and sheets each night, five of us kids would be sleeping in the drawing room, which had a tiny passage area from the door where we would remove our footwear. Imagine footwear of 11 members. In a nutshell, we find it easier to save. No rent, same fan. Only utilities like water would be higher. Transport shared. Undocumented people definitely want to get those benefits. So corruption will increase. That is logical conclusion. But the methods suggested are not the way to go about it. Convincing these people ...look there are four generations that have paid taxes to make America what it is today. It is only fair that you contribute proportionately. For that you have to take up jobs that American citizens wouldn't take up because they are not financially feasible for them. Convincing is the key. Building borders. Not. Denying birthrights Not.

@vandana7 Contrary to popular belief people who are undocumented get no benefits here. What their family shares is a different story but people always making it out like illegals get better healthcare and better pay than citizens. So untrue.

Definitely not an easy fix. But still ... as I explained to Judy. Illegal immigrants tend to squeeze into smaller accommodations, and save on rents, transport, etc. This makes not so well paying jobs feasible for them. Other Americans may not be ok with those jobs simply because they are not financially feasible. Consequently, the entitlement to take up jobs in the country should be limited to only those types of jobs for the undocumented immigrant as well as his children and grandchildren...overall till they reach 100 odd years of such service. Thereafter, they can apply for other jobs. Such solutions may help. After all, most Americans paid taxes, their fathers and forefathers too. That money went into building roads, hospitals, etc. It is only fair to expect a few generations of incoming immigrants to contribute in someway. By taking up lower end jobs they would ensure that costs do not increase at that end, and inflation remains manageable. Culturally they can save on rents, and transport, they are habituated to that. They and their kids...and grandkids and perhaps great grand kids.

For someone who himself is from immigrant family, this look down attitude does not speak well. I think immigrants tend to save well. They squeeze themselves in smaller units. Therefore, they soon get enough to buy homes. Unlike others who are culturally not inclined to share their living space and have contributed taxes for generations. Those taxes have made their country better whether through infrastructure, administration, law and order, or defense. So it is only fair to expect immigrants not to enjoy those benefits easily for which we have paid taxes. This applies more to illegal immigrants and their children. Their children would get accustomed to better environment and would not manage to adjust back home. They would take naturally to illegal stuff to maintain the standards they get accustomed to. Crimes would proliferate. More against the US since it would be the country denying them the rights. There has to be assessment as to how much I would end up spending on preventing those crimes, and fighting cases in courts, and on prisons etc. Vs. citizenship costs. I would want these people to take up lower end jobs, which are not viable for others because they are low paying jobs but viable for illegal immigrants and their kids. This would be right for the next 100 odd years, and thereafter they would be entitled to take up other jobs like the rest of citizens. They should also not have more than two kids.
