Our cupboards are on the wall

Yesterday, we built the second of two overhead cupboards which we’ve put in the laundry. They are from Ikea. Instructions from Ikea are always in pictures with no text at all. If you follow the pictures very carefully and don’t go guessing then everything fits as it should. The first cupboard took us quite a while but the second only took most of the morning. Lifting them into position was a bit tricky too as the laundry is very pokey. Having the counter top to stand on was helpful.

They look good to me. You must be glad to get that out of the way, and done with.

@kareng I also through out some old video tapes that we don't really need to keep and can't even watch unless we get them changed. One less small box to worry about.

How do you open them?

You give them a little push and they open. There is a magnet in the clip behind each door.

@JudyEv I do not get it You mean you push and the door opens towards you?

@allknowing Yes. I don't know how to explain it really. The door is held closed by a magnet. You push the door a little which I suppose breaks the magnet and a spring in the catch opens the door towards you.

Thanks. They will hold quite a bit. The top shelves will store things I need to keep but rarely use.

@RubyHawk Because I can't reach the top shelves anyway, I am planning to gradually get rid of items until I have most things within reach.

Looks very neat and light. I suppose you also have to attache knobs on the cupboard doors.

No, they don't have knobs. A magnet affair keeps them closed and when you give them a gentle push and a spring mechanism opens them.

Nice! Hubby wants something like this, but since I'm short I wanted something down below somehow (we don't have any counters in the laundry room).

There is a counter and cupboards beneath but the extra storage will be handy although I'll need the small stepladder to get to the top shelves.

@much2say We really have a lot of storage here although we've used the robes in the spare bedroom, which we use as our office, for storage too. There are three bedrooms but we don't have people staying over very often.

With this cupboards I think I'll be able to empty one cabinet from the spare bedroom. Once I get rid of that the room will look more spacious.

Very similar to those we installed in our laundry room. They look nice. They are heavy to lift once assembled.

It was quite tricky to lift them up but luckily they slid on to the support quite easily.

@JudyEv I wish you two had been at my house the day we mounted our big glass fronted clock on the wall. That was a horror moment when hubby finally got it on the screw and gingerly let go of it.

@sallypup I hear you so clearly! We had to slide this down the wall and hope it 'caught' on the holder.

We've done quite a lot of similar stuff over the years . Vince measures three times and sometimes still has to drill an extra hole but we got there in the end.

The Ikea ones come with all the instructions. You do have to buy the fittings to attach it to the wall as walls can be constructed of varying materials.

@porwest I hear you loud and clear but maybe the extra years Vin and I have lived have made us more likely to go to the instructions sooner rather than later.

@JudyEv I am terrible at reading instructions, which usually means I wind up looking at them AFTER something goes wrong and my wife looks at me in disgust, "If you'd have read the damn instructions..." Sometimes the words uttered, "How hard can it be?" turn out to be the worst words you can utter.

I was thinking that I also need to put more cabinets in my kitchen, and have them hanging on the wall. This is wasted space in my apartment. I wonder how long they will hold up on the wall? Let us now if they are sturdy enough for heavy stuff.

I think they are quite strong but I won't risk putting really heavy stuff in them. I have other places for that.

It's nice to have the cupboards on the wall - good for utilizing the space. I always like to have these overhead cupboards, but I thought it can be very pricey to ask someone to make one. I never thought we can actually buy them from Ikea and mount it ourselves. I think lifting them up is quite hard. You have done a very good job to do these yourselves.

We've assembled a lot of Ikea stuff now and as long as you go slowly and follow the instructions exactly, they go together well. Lifting them up was a bit tricky but we managed.

Quite good work done ! I wonder how the smooth edged stuff like this can be assembled. I wonder if you had to make sure that nothing slipped! May be IKEA wants its customers to be very smart and Intelligent like JudyEv !!

They are very cleverly designed. Every piece locks in and the pieces end up very stable. But of course it helps if you're very smart and intelligent like me.
