Forest Fire!

I never EVER would have imagined the woods being on fire so close to me! Yesterday that happened! I was outside working in the garden when the dog started barking and was all excited. This is usually an alert that a stranger has pulled up in the driveway. I went to see what all the commotion was about, and was greeted by a man from the Forestry Dept. who informed me that there was a forest fire down the road to the east of me that was within 1/2 a mile from our property. He also warned that with the wind we had yesterday that it could spread rapidly. I went inside to tell my hubby. He was on his way outside because he heard a knock on the door and thought that I had locked myself outside. Nope!! We spent the afternoon monitoring the fire, watching the Volunteer Fire Dept. go back and forth, and watching the smoke come our way. Luckily and by the grace of God, the fire was put out before dark and it did not reach us. We did ride down the road to see exactly where the fire was. It was really close to the property line and scary! There are no houses in that area, just woods. That land was also just leased as a hunting property, so my guess is that the hunters were there this weekend, had a campfire (even though we have been under a burn ban for 3 months) and did not extinguish the fire before leaving. I hope they the authorities find the responsible person(s) for starting the fire. That was how my Tuesday went! Did you have any unexpected news? Photo Credit: Pixabay, Public Domain

This would be scary indeed and was always my worst fear when we had our 18 acres more or less in the middle of bushland. I'm glad it's been extinguished now.

That property hasn't been leased for hunting since we have owned our property. The property behind us has.

Wow, that's something.I have about 10 acres of woods behind my house. Actually, there is quite a long treeline going down most of the street. If they caught fire I would be very nervous the fire could spread not only to my house, but others that back to the woods.

We were the only house on the side that the wind was blowing toward. The only other house before the highway was on the opposite side of the fire. Since we have been in severe drought conditions for over a month, it was very scary! The wind added to that!

It's so good to hear that the fire there was put out by nightfall. It sure sounds scary. Several years ago now when we lived closer to the foothills we had heavy smoke and the fire was much too close for comfort. I am very sensitive to the smoke since I can get bronchitis so easily. We had a nice big backyard I liked to spend time in but couldn't during that time. We have fires nearly every year here.

Thank heavens they were able to put the fire out. Hopefully they'll find the culprits and punish them for negligence

It will be a big fine and possibly jail term with a severe drought and a burn ban.

I wish they would do that here but all too often law enforcement looks the other way. We have a burn ban here almost every spring and summer, this past summer was the worst

That's scary! I'm glad they got the fire out. I hope they find the people responsible. I'm sure they can tell if it was from a campfire that didn't get put out properly.

The good news that I did not expect today that the handyman came this morning to repair the washing machine after about one week of the machine being broken.

I’m catching up here. I had quite a bit of unexpected goodies this week, including getting my mammogram done today (“hey, while you’re here, let’s do it so you don’t have to come back in five days”) and getting new hearing aids. It’s been a blessed week. I’m so thankful the fire didn’t affect your home.

That was indeed scary. And to think some thoughtless action triggered the fire that could have turned deadly but for the timely action of the Fire Department.
