Went for a Drive

I love going for drives in the country. I wound up by the Hannah Bridge, one of my favorites of the Scio area. I lived about three miles from there until I moved this past March. Last year, they built a staircase to the river so people could get down safer. This photo is mine of the Hannah Bridge. Covers were built over the wooden bridges to protect the bridges from snow, ice etc. Now days, bridges are more concrete or blacktop. The covered bridge tour in and around nearby areas of Scio, has five covered bridges. The tour last maybe 45 minutes to two hours depending on your driving speed and stopping. Since I like to photograph and take in the view, it takes me about two hours. The bridges are Gilkey built in 1939, Hoffman built in 1936, Shimanek (the only red colored one in Linn CO), built in 1966, Hannah (shown) built in 1936, and the Larwood built in 1939. Do you have beautiful old bridges near you?

In my area there are no old bridges in the Lake Charles area. Nice picture of the bridge on this post.

Thank you. Is there something near you that you would tell people it's a must see?

There are two or three old bridges here built out of tarred railroad ties. They aren't picturesque, in my opinion, but walking across them does give you some nice views down into two of the local rivers... The water is clear enough that you can see 20 or so feet down to the bottom and watch fish swimming down there. (Some people fish off the bridges.)

That sounds like the perfect viewing point. Sometimes, something not picturesque is still just lovely.

@noni1959 It's interesting to drive across them when there's snow or ice... they don't have a cover or side rails.

Nice, don't think we have any covered bridges down this way, or at least I don't know of them if we do!

There are some other bridges not far that aren't wooden covered but they are metal and so beautiful.

Beautiful bridge area ! We would love walking/hiking through there! You know L.A. . . . there are a few old city bridges. There might be some very small quaint bridges tucked away in little areas, but none that I can think of that are well known.

@noni1959 We went on that bridge not too long ago! It's historical and so part of urban LA, but oh through the years it has gotten sad. Graffiti, trash, and I don't know what you call those pillar things, but it seems homeless people are trying to make shelter in those holes (one looked like it was used as a fire pit). Oh yes, we know all those places!

The 1st Street Bridge is amazing but not covered. I love bridges like 1st Street too. Have you been across it? I used to go to L.A. often. Spent time in Longbeach, Los Angeles, Norwalk, Bellflower, and other.

@much2say That is so sad. It boggles my mind the destruction some will do.

This is a very pretty place. Yes, we have very old bridges in the area where I live. The oldest is the Bridge of Lavertezzo, built in 1327, you can see it in this photo.

@LadyDuck I love seeing old churches and cathedrals. They are so beautiful and so amazing they are still here after all these years. I would love to travel to different countries to see them.

We have a small little bridge nearby but it's not covered and I have no idea how old it is. I'm pretty sure there are lots of covered bridges here in Pennsylvania but I'm not sure where.

@noni1959 I'm a few hours away from Philly and hopefully one day I'll make a trip there and be a tourist. Sounds like you had a good trip there and hopefully one day you'll be able to go back.

@Marilynda1225 It was so fun. I went to Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, Benjamin Franklin grave, Betsy Ross house, triple decker bus to the stairs Rocky ran up and found the neatest little mom and pop pizza place that had the best ever. They also sent me back to my hotel with the most delicious chocolate cake. I hope to return someday and explore more.

There's so much history in PA. I spent a week in Philadelphia for work staying at the Lowe's near the City Hall. My room was on the 32nd floor facing the William Penn statue on top. There is the Thomas Mill bridge and I only remember the name since my last name is Thomas. I explored when off work and just so many beautiful historical sites there. I'd love to go back.

@jstory07 Is that the Sandy Creek Bridge? I've been to Coos Bay several times. My friend who passed away lived in North Bend. We'd go to Shore acres often.

It's beautiful. When I was growing up, we had a covered bridge in Green Bay, but when I returned here, it was already replaced by a standard bridge.
