I do not exercise my rights to vote

I do not believe we are truly a democratic nation. When we offer sops, we are buying votes. How does that amount to democracy? The uneducated are stuck based on caste or region or religion. Their numbers are higher than ours. Effectively, they elect and I just go there to be of no consequence. I might as well save me the effort. India recently gave 33 percent reservations to women in parliaments. My contention is, if I want stringent punishment for acid attackers, I need at least 35 percent. Without that percentage, that 33 percent is a farce. I am not impressed. So me says...I am fine with not voting. Do you feel as dejected about democracy in your world as I feel?

Richard Thompson (from Britain) sings about acid attacks in one of his songs. It may be "Psycho Street." Is that a "thing" in India?

All stats about rapes, and acid attacks available officially are distorted. There are many many more of such cases. Rapes ...family hides ...because of social respect. In many cases, the girl is killed and buried. Acid attacks, even husbands do that. Reason? Jealousy that their wives are good looking and suspicion that she is having affair. Insecurity. These cases do not reach courts more often than not because the wife does not have her own money to fight the case, and she does need a support after winning the case. In many cases, brothers and sisters in law resent the victim, having spent away so much on her treatment and cases. So they kinda ill treat and take away everything these unfortunate souls have or are likely to inherit. Most of these victims are educated so they are not into begging on streets. Moreover, they shy from being seen anywhere. My heart bleeds for them. If I were to ask for a kidney and an eye of the acid attacker, and also all his wealth and that of his spouse, and parents, and grandparents for not giving right values...no law would support me. Only a woman would understand how it feels to be disfigured so badly at a young age for no fault of hers. No possibility of finding a job, husband, and general avoidance, including family betrayal. Tell me can anything be worse? With 33 percent, it is not possible to get them any justice.

@TheHorse In India, people shy from talking about population control. Issue is, we have so much population, fewer jobs and traditional upbringing that boys are the head of family. So when a girl earns, or refuses to marry a guy based on his looks or job status or education status, it is perceived as an affront worth such punishment. (I qualify ..because of my independent nature..LOL). Hell, I cannot even get government to make it a non bailable offense. The first case I heard about...young girl, training to be in National Defense Force. She spurned the advances of such an unemployed street Romeo. Possibly in front of other friends. It did not go down too well. The guy climbed her terrace ...and poured a small bottle of acid on her face ..in summer. Her father ran from pillar to post to get justice for his child, selling his agricultural lands. How much does the government give? Rs.3 lakhs which is equal to 3571 USD. Government gives three times more than that to sportsperson winning medals. To put things in perspective...I spend more than that per year just for food utilities medicines etc, without paying any rent. She would need at least as much as I spend per year for surviving. That guy incidentally got married, after receiving bail, and had two kids while the girl remained indoors. That to me is adding insult to the injury.

@vandana7 Dang. I like to be funny. But that's not funny. What's an American Moderate to do? We pat ourselves on the back for being against genital mutilation, and yet this stuff occurs.

I am frequently told I am not a good citizen. But hey, why should I vote for a very rich guy who will not understand my pain when I am buying expensive food.

In India it is noisy and nobody is talking what they did and what they want to do. They are just offering ...kinda, if we are voted to power, we will give you this and that...nothing for middle class.

@vandana7 We don't have that here. We do just hear a bunch of lies about what they want to do

It's pretty hard to buy votes here which is a good thing. There just seems to be so much wrong in the world at the moment.

I haven't renewed my Voting Card after moving here. Earlier the reason was the way the government offices work here as compared to in Delhi. They seriously do not know what should be done, the procedure, or even which office or person to contact. It took us over two years to get a new Aadhar Card alone in Bangalore. The same thing happened with the Voting Card too and this time we didn't proceed further. Besides, I don't know anything about the candidates here so what's the use of Vote anyhow?

As if the candidate we vote for gets to do much. Not always. It is the parties that dictate, and that is annoying.

I always vote. It's my right and my chance to voice my opinions. However, if the election is going to be Biden vs. Trump, I don't know what I will do. Hope you are having a great day.

I feel the process needs refinement such that our votes count. Quite often a larger number of people vote for a candidate and yet, overall, the party that wins does not represent the majority of people because they win in constituencies that are not as densely populated.

Yes, I feel “disenchanted” as well, and for a lot of reasons. People in America complain about politicians being “old white guys,” and yet they never vote to put younger people on the ballots. They’re already talking about next year’s presidential election will be Biden vs. Tr*mp, and we haven’t even had a primary election yet…let alone the conventions where the candidate is officially nominated! Regarding India, do you think the caste system will ever be removed, or is it just too deeply ingrained?

Politicians and priests will not allow it to disappear. Added to that is the fact that our names indicate our castes. So it is easy to identify who belongs to which caste in most cases. Biden was certainly not the right candidate and neither Trump. When America has president who conveys strength ...the rest of the world behaves.

I am not voting either. Here we don't have caste system, but it's a very corrupt country.

You are from the US? There is a lot that needs to be corrected out here. At times, even I feel like packing bags and moving out. But it seems like betraying the country.
