Open Payments - Check on Your Doctor's Freebies!

You know how your doctor always has those pharmaceutical people coming around with their cases of medications and free samples? Have you ever wondered if the doctor gets freebies for prescribing a certain medication or using a particular medical device? Now you can find out how much and from whom the doctor is getting freebies. I checked my PCP (Primary Care Physician) on this website and found that she just gets about $20 per visit from these salespeople; and they were all classified under "Food and Beverage". My guess is that it was just a box of donuts for the office. Want to check out your doctor? Go to: Photo Credit: Pixabay

Doctors here earn a lot from them mostly in form of some good expensive gifts. Taking cash or money transactions might get them scrutinized. They ask for expensive gifts instead.

@LindaOHio This is illegal here too. But then people do find loops and holes in the system for ill practices.

I wondered if some doctors got kickbacks for prescribing certain medications. That's one reason I always stick with the meds I've taken for years. There was a time I tried several different ones when I was trying to find something to help my depression. Even did the DNA testing that would show what type of anti-depressants I should be taking. But, I have just learned to keep with the one that has helped me the most for years. I hope this one young doctor who swore she'd find one that would help me wasn't taking kickbacks. I won't try any new ones anymore. They don't help anyway. Thanks a lot for the link. I'm glad to see that the government is tracking this. I notice my doctor is listed from back in 2020. Food and beverage. No other years.

It's a handy little site. I don't expect to find anything bad now that the government watches over it so closely.

They kept saying they were getting rid of these. I remember getting such cool pens and notepads when I worked at a pediatrician multidisciplinary office…then one day they stopped because they were “illegal.” Bah. It’s still going on. In fact, my dermatologist has come u with a completely new scam with it…selling “beauty creams” that are NOT prescription (and not covered by insurance).

@LindaOHio — you’d think a dermatologist would have something better than that.

That beauty cream crap is definitely a scam to make more money.

As my brother is a doctor, I know very well how they were "bribed" by the pharmaceutical people to encourage them to prescribe their products. My brother never did, but from him I always got free medications.

@LindaOHio that happened today. The Greek Orthodox church up the street was hanging out turkey dinners. My friend Nick went to get some for him and his boys and got me some too. So much I am still warming up a portion now.

I'm pretty sure our previous optometrist prescribed some supplements that weren't really necessary.
