Have you ever taken your clothes out of the washer and put them in the dryer. While you are doing that there is a sock monster watching you. The sock monster only has one leg that he hops around on. So he only needs one sock. He does not need a pair. So he stops the dryer and looks all of the socks over. He decides on the best sock and takes that. He gets all excited over just one sock. Than he goes to another dryer somewhere else and does the same thing. So if you are ever missing just one sock that is because the sock monster took one. See now it can be told.

I had a cat that thought she was a sock monster and would steal a single sock. Some of them never returned.

I read time by time from American users that they "miss" socks. I wonder if it's the way your washing machines are built. I never missed one, same my Mom.

@jstory07 There are no sock monsters also in Italy and France. I have no idea if they have sock monsters in Germany, I doubt. I have seen videos on YouTube that show where to find the "lost socks".

We had the sock monster in Latvia but it was working on the washer and one or two socks always disappeared. Then the washer broke down and my husband was a whiz on taking things apart and fixing them so he did that to the weather and we discovered that one of the turning parts had at least one or more socks wrapped around it,

I am sure a black hole spontaneously appears, sucks the sock to another dimension and then disappears. Simples!
