Monday Morning Coffee Talk

United States
January 15, 2024 9:28am CST
Happy Monday Everyone! it's cloudy and cold here this morning so my coffee tastes extra good. Since it's cold with snow expected tonight I'm thinking it would be a good day for stew. I have all the fixings so all I have to do it take out the crockpot and throw it all together. I love days when cooking isn't a hassle. I don't know how I turned into someone who doesn't enjoy cooking anymore. Back in the day I loved to be in the kitchen and prepare big meals. Now I'm happy with something easy and fast or a crockpot meal that can basically cook itself. Had so much trouble getting groceries this weekend. Our supermarkets had hardly any produce. Couldn't get potatoes and fruit in any of our three store choices. Don't know if there was a problem with deliveries but it's just weird that none of our stores had half of the stuff I needed. Good thing there's always a plan B. Without potatoes this week we'll have to switch to pasta and rice but I am going to miss my fruit. Hopefully in the next few days everything will be back in stock. Can't say there's much else going on here. What's new in your little corner of the myLot world?

Nothing new or good can be perfect. I'm kind of happy when things go smoothly and nothing rocks the boat

I'm sorry your stores were out of what you needed. Stew sounds like a good choice. Nothing much going on here. Have a good day and keep warm.

That sounds like a delicious supper, especially on a night like tonight. I thawed out some ground beef and made up some hamburger patties and since there was a little left over I made some meatballs and we will have those and beans for supper. I usually put a little bisquick into the muffin tin and then drop the meatballs into that, it is a little more filling that way and delicious.

@Marilynda1225 I don't think that I am such a good cook, more of an old fashioned and practical cook. Try the bisquick thing, just whip it up, spray your pan, add it to the muffin tin, about 1/3 full with the bisquick and then drop a raw meatball into it. You and your daughter will love it. It is such a comforting meal on a cold day, and with such little effort and not much time.

Meatballs in Bisquick is something I've never tried but it sounds like it's right up my alley. You sound like such a good cook Julia and your meals always sound so good. Its so cold here today that something hot seemed like a good idea.

I am a bit lazy cooking right now. I know, it's because winter makes me lazy, but I still cook every day. We had a beautiful sunny day and not too cold, I cannot complain.

@Marilynda1225 Our temperature should remain more or less the same all week. It is no more than 32 F (0 C) in the morning, but it gets up to 44 F (7 C) during the day. It's not too cold.

Usually around here if the weather gets back the stores get wiped out too, but I did not encounter that this time around. But it happens.

Maybe our stores had a problem with delivery. Weird that all stores didn't have the same stuff

@Marilynda1225 Around here it is usually because everyone goes nuts and cleans them out. But I can imagine weather can also play a role in stuff getting into the stores.

There is nothing much going on here other than ridiculous wind chills. Tomorrow I have a doctor appointment, but for today I am going to enjoy being inside. This morning, my groceries were delivered, but the store was low on soup. I guess that really shouldn’t surprise me with this weather.

I've been enjoying having my groceries delivered and I find I don't buy anything on a whim. Hope you can get to your doctor appointment without any weather problems

Stew sounds really good even though it isn't that cold here. Have you tried instacart? I've been able to order items that I never could find and they delivered it to me here at home. Umm, no it isn't a free service but for me for now it's working out better than sitting in backed up traffic just to go 6 miles.

It sure is. When it's cold or when there's road construction that interferes with normal travel to and from a local grocery it comes in handy.

I've never tried Instacart but I doubt they would have found what I was looking for. For all the stores to be without the same stuff I assume there was a delivery problem. You're lucky not to have to deal with all this cold weather. Grocery delivery certainly is convenient isn't it

I know what you mean Marilyn about the cooking..I do love to, but these days..it is just not happening. Easier for quickness. No potatoes? I know how that is..seems you might be missing something. Well, its bitter cold here, not going out for sure. I hope you have a good day.

I'm sorry you had trouble with your groceries this past weekend. I hope you can get your potatoes and fruit soon. It's good you have an option with pasta and rice. Plan Bs are helpful. I don't normally order grocery delivery, but I did this past Saturday. I'm glad I did, since I won't get to Hy-Vee until next week. Thankfully, I got everything I needed. With this cold snap, I cancelled today's appointments.

Grocery delivery is so convenient. I've been using it more and more recently. I can't believe you're having such freezing cold weather.

@Marilynda1225 Yeah, it's really cold here. It's supposed to get to -35 tonight. At least I have nice warm blankets on the bed. I turn the thermostat down to 70 and I hear it running in the morning. Yes, it is convenient, though I haven't met a grocery picker yet who can pick bananas the way I like them. I like them 100% yellow or green. I get spots. I don't mind spots, but I want to see it a couple of days after I buy them. I don't want them to be too ripe before I eat them.

I know why I wish I cooked less. It is the cleanup after. Your meal sounds great. Maybe the winter weather prevented some deliveries to your stores?

I am canceling my cable next month. I am sure happy to be saving over $100 after this month. That's all that's new in my corner. I know how boring cooking can be. My problem is I don't have the $$ to buy all the ingredients for the kind of things I want to cook. So I gave it up back about 2010. My daughter does it all now.

We are still enjoying pleasant weather. Temperature around 16-21C. But it will drop to below 10C towards weekend. I started reading a mystery story written by a Japanese author yesterday.
