Your Extracurricular Activity as a Child

Did you play sports as a child, take lessons on musical instruments, or take karate lessons (Amyra did, lol) as a child? I think most parents want their children to be involved in some activity that enriches their mental and social development. My parents made me take piano lessons from ages five to thirteen. In addition, because I was 5’11, I was made the center on the basketball team from fourth grade to the age of sixteen when I graduated. I didn’t like playing basketball either. Meanwhile, my sister loved taking piano lessons, and decided to learn the flute as well (I really loved hearing her play the flute). What did you guys do for those extracurricular activities? Did/do your children ask to be involved in those things?

@TheHorse I knew the fate of the calves I raised. I still made them into pets

4-H sounds cool. But did you have to send some of your favorite animals off to an unknown fate?

I took piano lessons, but my mother let me quit. I wish she had said I had to stick it out for at least a year. I guess the thing I loved was chorus in school...I wasn't athletic at all.

girl scouts, debate and softball..other than that just played games and read. My mother wanted me to be a candy striper once..I hated that..because they made you start out working in the hospital coffeeshop and that was just like slave labor.

@AmbiePam It wasn't fun. I wasn't very keen on the whole candy striper deal anyway. I didn't want to be a nurse. I was in a bowling league at one point too..

@ambiepam I avoided sport quite sedulously at every opportunity till I was 34 and started swimming and trained (successfully) as a pool and beach life guard. My kids eschewed sports too. Art? I couldn’t draw a wiggly line.

I wish I knew how to swim. Do you get the chance to swim at this point in your life?

@AmbiePam Pool swimming is hard here because there are always kids in the pools. I love swimming in the sea though, but I no longer have much opportunity.

I was in choir from 7th grade and on....but that's about it. I wanted to do dance but there were reasons that didn't happen. Sorry you didn't like playing basketball! I wanted to but I was always too short. I would like my son to do some things, get his mind off being on technology so much! He can even pick which sport or activity

My school offered a few things. I played the flute for a while. I also played the recorder. I think I tried piano, but wasn't as good as I would've liked to have been.

I played the violin in elementary school and also was a Brownie and a Girl Scout. I also took karate in Highschool and got to the green belt and then quit.

We all had to take music lessons. We all began on the piano, I stayed there. One of my brothers took guitar lessons at the Conservatory, and my baby brother took accordian lessons. Listening to him practice the accordian was painful on the ears. My other brother took a year of piano and then that was all, he didn't have anything musical in his body.

I took piano lessons and hated it. I love music but would rather have played the accordion. My kids still laugh at me when I tell them I had always wanted to play the accordion.

I did none as a kid. I was always locked up alone. I wanted to learn to play piano and so much more but as I knew it was not going to happen I did not keep my hopes up. Amyra is doing so well. It's so nice to get kids to learn new things and get involved with other kids.

She really needs the interaction since she is homeschooled. I wish she was not.

@BabeSays The public schools do not offer a good education where she would be required to go, and the private schools are too expensive to attend. My sister used to be a teacher, so at least Amyra has a professional teacher. The other two are also homeschooled, although for two years Hudson went to a special needs preschool. But he graduated from it, and no other nearby school is equipped to take him due to the care he requires throughout the day.

@sjvg1976 For the most part, parents here prefer the same, although sometime wannabe athlete fathers push their sons too far in sports. They apply undo pressure in hopes their sons will be successful in athletics when they were not.

Ballet from age 4 and then cheerleading, was doing both at the same time in 8th grade until they started colliding with each other. :/ I stuck with the cheerleading because the coach didn’t want me to quit and then I ended up helping her choreograph our dance routines, so in a way it was still like doing both. :)
