Saying 'please' and 'thank you' when it's not needed

The photo has nothing to do with the text and some of you might have seen it before. Have you had any experience with ChatGPT? I know it’s a controversial subject but it’s here to stay so we might as well get used to it. It can be used for good as well as bad. I’ve only used it once or twice but it’s a quick way to get background information. I know you also need to check other sources but it can be a handy tool. However, after all that palaver, what I really wanted to tell you was that, when I log into it, it asks ‘How can I help you today?’ I type in my query but have to exert the utmost self-control not to add ‘please’ at the end of my question. I also have trouble with Vince not saying ‘thank you’ to Siri after she helps him with something. And I don’t like him being impolite to the girl/guy on the GPS when she/he leads us up the garden path. Anyone else have these sorts of problems? Maybe I’m just a bit over-polite sometimes.

I am a please and thank you kind of person too, there aren't enough of us left in this world these days, although both of our little granddaughters know the more pleases that they use the easier it is to get what they'd like.

@JudyEv At this stage, I would say that they are better at getting what they'd like with their charm.

We taught our boys to have good manners. It did make a difference to how they were viewed, particularly by older generations. I can just see Willow and Harper using good manners and charm to get something they want.

@judyev I refuse to use GPS because I can’t tolerate my wife giving me instructions about where to turn never mind a gadget immitating Joanna Lumley.

Poor lady - I can't stand her. But don't you have a choice? I know we do. Some are better than others but some have phrases peculiar to their own characters. Boy George always invites people to have a cup of tea at the finish.

I’m just like you. It is so innate to be polite that I can’t seem to help it. Maybe we’re a little odd, Judy!

If you don't add 'thank you' it's like you've missed out something.

I have never used ChatGPT, but I'm sure I will in the future. It's funny that you posted a discussion like this, because when I talk to Siri I always say please and thank you to her. A co-worker of mine was laughing at me about it the other day; I told him that Siri and I have a very delicate relationship and that it is in my best interest to be polite to her.

@JudyEv I don't know how. you talk to her woman on woman, but I speak to her in a very flirtatious manner. Some say we have a real love/hate relationship with each other.

Good manners can make a great difference as to how others view you. Being kind is a really lovely thing to be.

It is the same as talking to the self check out, only the few times I have used it I have been guilty of talking back. "I AM putting in my loyalty number". "I DID place my item in the bagging area." I am secretly a rude person.

And I'm sure it's only good manners that stops you thumping the wretched thing. I can't see you are being rude, secretly or other wise! lol

I don’t consider manners a “problem,” even if it IS Siri. Yes, I say “thank you” to Siri (and he [I have the voice set to male] replies something like “don’t mention it” or “sure thing”). And I like that photo!!

Those lambs were having such fun on that log. One fell off a bit later and there was even an old ewe standing on it at one stage.

@FourWalls Lambs love to play up and down dry creek beds too. You sometimes see 20 or 30 of them all having the time of the lives, usually towards evening.

I like the photo, cute little lambs. I never thought to this problem. We do not have Siri and Alexa, but I found myself "thanking" a robotic answer on a site.

@JudyEv - It is so common for me to say please and thank you. I almost say please to the machine at the self checkout when it asks if I want to pay with cash or using my card.

It can be really hard NOT to say thank you at such times. It seems really inbuilt in us older people.

I'm always saying please and thank-you to Siri. Once my GPS said, Ask me how I'm doing? I said you're not that helpful. She said, Sorry.??

I was raised with please and thank you and use it all the time. We don't have Siri or GPS; and I don't use ChatGPT....at least not yet. I LOVE the picture. Hope you and Vince have a good day.

I know chat gpt but I have never used it. I also think I could be over-polite too because I use such words often. I don't think it's a bad thing. Being polite is better than being impolite.

I had someone as me to help with a project today. I was to proofread some chapters from a book and involved some technical stuff about all kind s of gagets and detectors to help people elderly and disabled if they should fall and not be able to get up. What I discovered is that while checking on grammar they have what is generative Al. It really helped me put together some of the more complex sentences and technical stuff, I was sure happy about that,

Our son more or less talked us into having a look at least. He asked for 500 words on why teaching kids ukulele was beneficial. We then asked for 300 words, then 100 and finally a haiku. It was very impressive.
