The Bad - I got bitten by a #$#$#$% dog

Today's hike had the good, the bad and the funny. Getting the bad out of the way first: There I was, still 7 km from town, minding my own business behind some cows, thinking how funny it was that an hour or so before sunset I'm basically walking the cows home, when out of nowhere a dog came running up behind me and attacked me. It happened so fast! I got two deepish gashes on my calf before I could kick the thing off. I was too shocked to give chase and continued hiking. Lucky I was wearing jeans, so the gashes were not too deep and the blood could soak into that as I never walk with a first aid kit. Cleaned out the wounds with tee tree oil when I got home and washed it out with tar soap. That should take care of any nasties. Quite a mess to clean up and lucky no stitches needed - I would not even know where to go. Lucky me also it was a solo hike. Dalene was hysterical enough on seeing the gashes, I hesitate to think what would have happened had she actually been with me. Now she'll be all anxious whenever I go hiking, grrr. I need this like I need a hole in my head. I do not like dogs. I think all dog owners should 7 foot fences and muzzle and leash their dogs as soon as they leave the premises. As for the "aw cute doggie don't worry he won't bite" argument - no. Dogs bite. They all bite, period. As for the licking thing - gross. I'll have to consider hiking with a stick now. Mostly the dogs here just bark and go away. And I suppose they want food. I don't like being the food though.

@traveonworld Not good. I always walk with an anti dog poking device disguised as a walking stick. Dogs are not to be trusted.

Oh goodness. You may need a rabies shot. And I agree with everything you said about dogs and dog owners!

I don't like certain dogs. I can usually tell if it's a friendly one or not. Grr! is right. My mom used to let her dog lick her all over her face and it would totally gross me out.

Was the dog associated with the cows, or just a random stray? A big stick is definitely a good idea.

I like dogs a lot but like yourself I do not want to be bitten anymore than being scratched by a cat.
