These dogs will have their portrait painted

We had an order yesterday for a photo from a 2021 endurance ride. The photo is the one I’ve added here, of two dogs watching proceedings from the safety of their car. The owner wanted a copy of the dogs as she has commissioned a painting of them from a friend. The artist has now been in touch with Vince to ask permission to use the photo which was nice of her. We met her years back when she rode in endurance. It’s interesting that she now paints portraits of dogs and horses.

That's a great photo of those two dogs, and I can imagine how great a portrait of the two would look. I think it would be awesome!

That does seem like it would make a nice portrait. I used to have painting in here. It was called Portrait of a Dog's head. It was by a noted artist Henry Rankin Poore. He was a friend of friend's grandfather, an artist himself. Anyway, Although I enjoy art, I sold it...I needed the money more...

@JudyEv Geez,a portrait of Nico,,,that's all I need. Once he is gone, I want to forget him..what a crank! My last cat was a super sweetie though.

I can understand that. Needs must and all that. Different if it were a painting of Nico or your previous cat. Sorry - I've forgotten his name.

They are good looking dogs. I can imagine that there would be a niche market for animal portraits.

There are a few artists here who specialise in these types of paintings. Maybe they have a 'real' job as well.

@AliCanary Oh wow!! Thank you for that. I had no idea. We do try to pay attention to background and details if we can then later the photos are processed in Lightroom to bring out the definition, etc - hopefully. Your comments are really interesting. Thanks again. PS: Any dog photos are spur of the moment shots really. We're more interested in the horses and their riders. We take photos at horse endurance rides. Our website is downunderimages. com if you wanted to have a look.

@JudyEv great composition, color, very fine clarity of detail, and really perfect pose, capturing an absolutely precious expression. It really shows their personalities! It's quite an accomplishment to get such a good picture of both dogs at once. Photographing animals is hard because they move so much, and you might get a wonderful shot of one, but the other is turning away or looking down. Another important technical point for a portrait artist - the dogs are overlapping enough to give a sense of depth and connection, but not so much that the smaller dog is obscured - his entire head contour is separate. If I had any complaint at all, it would be that there is an object in the righthand corner that is preventing us from seeing the smaller dog's paw, but the photograph is still one of the best references I've seen, for a candid shot.

It is the right thing to do really but many wouldn't bother. She is a professional. Vince thanked her and she said she always asks permission.

I think one of the dogs might be nearing the end of its life so she'd like a painting of it.
