Have you heard of Treibball?

Our Welsh Pembroke Corgi, Sophie, more officially known as Princess Sophia of Buzby Beach, earned her AKC Canine Good Citizen-Advanced certificate this past Thursday night. Earning the certificate involved passing 10 challenges of behavior expected of a Good Canine Citizen while out with its human in public. Sophie passed with flying colors. The dog trainer suggested to us that we try Sophie out at a sport called Treibball (also known as Urban Herding). This is a herding style sport for people with herding dogs, which Corgis are, who are not able to keep herd animals. Instead of herding animals, the dogs “herd” large, inflated balls into a goal. The dog’s human stays in the goal box and directs the dog as to which ball to herd into the goal next with voice and hand commands. This video shows several examples of dogs and their humans participating in the sport. As you’ll see in the video, the sport isn’t limited to herding breeds. Any dog can participate. https://youtu.be/w6muFKSlsAo

Sounds like a good activity to keep Sophia active. Hadn't heard of it before.

Treibball has only been around since 2009. It started in Germany and has slowly expanded across Europe and to North America.

It sounds very interesting. I never heard of it. My dog went to Obedience school...He did not graduate... Kind of like Beauty School dropout from Grease. Actually, he was OKwe just couldn't go to the last class.

@DWDavis Someone I know through friend is really big on showing her dogs. She has only purebreds of one species.

K and I used to show our Labradors in Obedience. That was back when we were first married.

@DWDavis I'm sure she will. Dogs are always (for the most part) eager to please.

I guess they have agility trials there too. I mention it because I saw this great video of a golden retriever wandering along the course virtually ignoring his handler. The people we got our corgi from used theirs for herding their sheep.

K took Sophie to be evaluated for herding instinct. She did well, considering it was her first time ever seeing sheep. With our travel schedule, we can't reasonably keep sheep, geese, or ducks for her to herd here at home. Treibball is a great alternative if Sophie takes to it.

@DWDavis I think it is a wonderful idea. A great hobby/pastime for both yourselves and Sophie. Working breeds are much happier I think if they are able to 'work' at whatever might be their instinctive calling.

Congrats to Sophie for her certificate. She is so stinkin' cute I can't stand it. I love Corgis. Are you going to try Treibball with Sophie? Have a good day.

We are going to try Treibball. If we can't find a trainer or class nearby, we'll use YouTube videos or virtual training sessions.
