Do you have good typing skills?

The photo has nothing to do with the text. Vince is reading the autobiography of Malcolm Turnbull, one of our former prime ministers. Vince keeps telling me bits and pieces from the book. The machinations of a political party make very interesting reading. It seems no-one can be trusted, even within your own ‘people’. A prime minister who got dumped to make way for Turnbull was very bitter and did all in his power to disrupt his governing. Leaks to the media were a common tactic and back-room meetings were very secretive. But I really wanted to tell you this. Back in Turnbull’s very early days, he did a typing course and says it was one of the most useful courses that he ever did. Vince learnt typing at school and says the same thing. Who was to know that the advent of computers would make typing skills so handy?

I used to take a course in typing. It's useful. I can now type with all my fingers without looking at the keyboard.

It's very, very handy to be able to touch-type if you use the computer a lot.

Once computers became common, anyone that could type had an advantage.

My typing speed is only average, so I brushed off the idea of working as an online medical transcriptionist.

My speed isn't very fast. I didn't learn touch typing until I was an adult.

I think that keyboarding is much easier than typing ever was. Even on the electric typewriters. I learned to type on a manual typewriter, and I actually excelled at that course in high school.

I agree. Vince learnt on a Remington manual typewriter at school but I had an electric typewriter when I learnt as an adult.

Nope, as you can probably tell. I do OK though. I don't need to look at the keyboard, although perhaps I should.. lol. It is usually the tablet that makes things wonky though.

That’s how I made my living: typing! I was as good as 80 WPM.

I didn't learn till I was in my late 30s I guess and I could never get more than about 60wpm. But nowadays that's plenty fast enough for what I want to do.

@JudyEv - I remember when we chatted with Coral in the morning, she dictated to her smartphone and I answered typing, she thought I also dictated.

When I was at school typing was only taught to those who were considered not clever enough to do other things. And anybody who was anybody had a secretary. I never leant to type properly. I did have a rather half-hearted attempt but by then I was already able to 'type' at quite a respectable rate so there was no real incentive.

That was the situation at my school too. I did a secretarial course as an adult but I do a few odd things that I wasn't taught. For instance, I only ever hit the space bar with my right hand.

@JudyEv I'm sure I do lots of odd things but I wouldn't know! I do look at the keyboard most of the time, but in fact it's not good for your eyes to be looking at a screen all the time so I see that as an advantage For some reason Little One has developed an obsession and really wants a typewriter, I have no idea why! Anyway we have managed to acquire two typewriters (one old, one ancient) to surprise her with on her birthday so we'll see what she thinks. The ancient one is really hard work!

We can learn from people. Turnbull cited his typing skills as the most important part of his life. I learned to type in high school. I wasn't good with it at first, but I'm doing much better now. It took a long time for me to not look at the keys while I typed. Now, it's second nature. Like Turnbull, it is the most important skill I have.

The photo is beautiful. I can type quickly but I can't say that I have good typing skills. I also move my hand over the keyboard to find letters while typing.

I never got to that speed but I touch-type reasonably accurately. It's handy on myLot as you can type a lot of comments in a relatively short time.

When I was in 5th or 6th grade it was mandatory that we took typing, or we wouldn't move on to the next grade. I've often wondered, did they know what the was coming with computers. What a lovely photo.
