Do you wash new clothes before using them?

I always wash new underwear (panties, bras, undershirts...) before using them, but I usually don't worry too much about washing jeans, sweaters, jackets, and so on. A friend told me yesterday that she washes everything as soon as she buys it. According to her, clothes are sprayed with a chemical to give them a smooth and straight appearance, and this chemical is harmful to us. I did my research online and it appears this is true. I bought this cardigan in the sales and I haven't worn it yet, I really like it and I know that washing ruins clothes a lot, but now I'm not sure whether I should wash it or not. Do you wash new clothes before using them? Picture of my cardigan.

I always wash everything that goes directly on my skin, I would not wash that cardigan.

@ladyDuck I will always wear this cardigan with a blouse or a sweater underneath it, só it won't touch my skin directly.

I’m with Anna on this one. If it touches your skin, wash before wearing.

I do not wash new clothes that were purchased at a store, but I do wash clothes that I get from a garage sale, thrift store, or other place that comes from other people having worn the clothing.

Second hand clothes always need to be washed before wearing them, no matter if it is a cardigan, a coat, jeans... but this cardigan was bought online directly from the store.

I think I'll continue to do what I've always done, just wash my underwear, I can't wear those without washing them. The cardigan won't look the same if I wash it.

I do wash new clothes when I purchase it from the store not when I purchase them online. The cardigan looks really beautiful.

I was like you and would wash only the undergarments. Few years back, I came to know of this fact while reading an article in one of the lifestyle magazine. I would wash them but not all the time. I have bought a new dress for a wedding in the family in April. I will not wash it as I want it to look new for the grand party.

@nela13 Yes. I would not wash this cardigan. Anyways, it won't touch your skin directly. The dress that I would wear for wedding will touch my skin. But I won't wash it as I want it to look new for the party.

That’s a beautiful sweater. I hope it looks the same after it’s washed. I only wash the same items as you, because most of my clothes are dry clean only. I also like the look of new clothes, chemicals and all!

For me, it mostly depends. A lot of times no. The other day I cycled in a new pair of underwear and didn't wash them. I usually will do that with socks as well. Jeans and tee shirts will usually be washed first. Like I said, it just depends.

@nela13 I think the only reason I prefer to wash jeans is just to soften them up a bit.

The cardigan is beautiful! With the exception of outerwear (jackets, hoodies, etc), I usually will wash everything before wearing it the first time.
