A village full of tightrope walkers

Have you heard of the village of Tsovkra-1? It’s a tiny, secluded village in the southern republic of Dagestan in Russia, nestled in the Greater Caucasus Mountains. The ‘1’ in the name differentiates the village from another of the same name. What is special about this village of some 400 people is that every able-bodied person can walk a tightrope. There seems no clear reason as to how the tradition started but legend has it that young men would walk a tightrope across narrow valleys to visit their sweethearts. In the decades following World War II, when circuses were really popular in Russia, no less than seventeen of Tsovkra-1’s citizens became famous for their tightrope-walking skills. The photo was taken somewhere in France. And there is no way I could ever walk a tightrope.

That must be a thing that is passing through generations. I could also never walk a tightrope.

@JudyEv I think so, but I know that Native American Mohawks were often used as labourers on the skyscrapers because it was believed they had no natural fear of heights.

I am sure it must be the only place in the world where this happens.

I can hardly walk a straight line now, let alone walk on something narrow even if only inches off the ground.

That is amazing. There is also a village in China that people have to go up and down ladders all the time to go to the town below.

I've seen photos of those long, long ladders with old women struggling up with their shopping on their backs.

I would never be able to walk a tightrope either but it's very interesting to hear about all those tightrope walkers in Tsovkra-1's,

The village is small now but once would have been much bigger with many more walking on tightropes.

I guess in that village there is no-one that is scared of heights. Anyone who was would definitely be the odd man out! lol

I think I have heard of Dagestsn, but not of this village. The geography of this area and the needs of people could have been a big factor. May be the Tightrope walking acted as a catalyst for tourist inflow since times immemorial.

The area is incredibly mountainous which might account for the tightropes.

@judyev Successful tightrope walking is currently an essential life skill for many Russians trying to make it through life currently. Bu yes, the feat you refer to is quite impressive.

I guess if everyone is doing it, then you would take it for granted that you'd be able to learn to do it too.

I couldn't find any other information about it but it was once a much larger village so there would have been probably 100s walking tightropes.

I couldn't find out much more but the earlier they started the easier it would be. At least you'd think that would be the case.
