I want a new stove

I want the electric stove with the glass cook top. I believe it is called induction, but I need to look it up. It only works if there is a metal pan on the "burner". I have a gas stove now, and more than once I have accidentally turned on a burner, but not enough to get the pilot light to flame. That resulted in gas fumes in the house. Today I came home from work and asked Bob what he had cooked in the oven or what he had burnt. He insisted "nothing". Bob left to go get us Subway sandwiches, and I found a burner on under a cast iron griddle. It had been on since his "breakfast" which is usually around 10:30 a.m. Luckily it was not hot enough to cause a grease fire. He was embarrassed when I told him. This would not happen with a different type of stove.

Occasionally a burner gets left on here too but we're not really keen on induction stoves. The other thing we found at a house-sit was that the top goes off its face if you put anything on it that isn't metal so you can't use it as extra counter space just to put things on out of the way. But many swear by them. I hope you find something suitable.

I am not sure what you mean by "goes off it's face"? I would likely balance a chopping board on it.

We replaced our old gas range (which started going wrong in very dangerous ways!) with an electric oven and an induction hob. Induction is supposed to be the most energy efficient type, and you can be super energy-efficient by using a pressure cooker on it! It does take a bit of getting used to but we are getting along OK. The annoying warning beeping is a pain but you can use it as an extra work surface if, for example, you put a wooden chopping board on top.

@GardenGerty Whenever we put something non-steel on the top, it would start beeping at us. It didn't seem to like anything on top of it much at all, even when it was cold and all switched off.

I have one of those. I wouldn't want to back to the old style..with food falling under the burners and so forth.

Various family members have them, and I think I could learn to use it. I would like the smooth surface to clean.

We bought our son new kitchen appliances when they moved into their new home. Our daughter-in-law choose a range with an induction cooktop. It requires stainless steel cookware, and you can never use tin foil on it. I found that out when I had a bread dip wrapped in tin foil that I sat on the cooktop, which wasn't on, and our son corrected me-quickly. That range was the most expensive range we have ever bought coming in at just over $5,500.

@GardenGerty That, and then there is a chance that you will need to purchase more stainless steel cookware. I picked up another set for our son so he has 2 sets.

We have a glass top stove but it's not an induction stove. So, a burner could still be left on.

I have had several brand new flat top stoves in previous homes we built or bought. I don't ever want another one. Keeping them perfect is hard. Forget cast iron pans, forever, as well. No matter how careful you are, they will permanently scratch or make marks on your stovetop.

Nothing I own will ever be perfect. We are getting too old to have those gas fumes in the house, accidentally or on purpose.

That was my experience with these glass cook tops as well. Just a nightmare. Never again. And you are right about those cast iron skillets. I still used my wok a lot, but even that seemed to muck things up. I just never want another one of those again. But some people do like them. They just aren't for me. For me it is gas all the way.

@porwest I don't have a gas option where I live, but I would definitely prefer it to the electric. I have coils. The stove was new when I moved in, and I've kept it up very well, so it's fine. I just know I never, ever want a flat top stove, ever again.

That skillet should be well seasoned and non-stick after being heated that long. I hate gas anything except the water heater in the home. I definitely hate gas stoves as I cannot cook properly on them. At least one thing I make needs the heat turned off at the end but still steams with the heat of the hot burner as it cools. You cannot do that with a gas stove. Also, I can never get the temperature regulated on a gas stove.

I grew up cooking on gas. Had a hard time but learned electric. Hubby wanted gas when we moved, but I am the one who does most of the cooking and all of the cleaning.

There are two kinds of cooktops like that. One is induction as you'd mentioned, and thre's the one we have which is seramic. You still have to be careful, as both hold heat even when the stove is off, but you won't have gas fuems in the house. I hope you can find one.

Thanks for the info. I will look at both. It likely will not be until summer, though.

We have replaced our old gas range (which started going wrong in very dangerous ways!) with an electric oven and an induction hob. They are supposed to be the most energy efficient. It takes a little getting used to but as you say you can't accidentally turn it on unless you leave a compatible pan (or any other item) on top. You have to have pans made of cast iron or induction-compatible stainless steel (not all stainless steel pans work, they have to be magnetic).

I have a lot of cast iron and heavy stainless steel. Not sure if it is induction compatible. Is there a way to test it? If a magnet sticks to it it is compatible?

@GardenGerty Yes that's exactly it, just test it with any magnet, a fridge magnet or anything.

I read that a lot of chefs are now turning to induction. I have no aspiration of being a chef.

It's what we're using an induction stove. It's also economical as we don't have to buy LPG. It's also easy to clean.
