Alva and Consuela Vanderbilt - a glimpse into the past

A while back I read a non-fiction book entitled Consuelo and Alva Vanderbilt and written by Amanda Mackenzie Stuart. The Vanderbilts were once America’s richest family, and it would be impossible to tell their story in a few short paragraphs. However, Consuelo was one of the greatest heiresses of the late 19th century and, at the insistence of her mother, ended up marrying into one of Great Britain’s most influential families, the Marlboroughs. What intrigued me most about the book was the extravagant life-style of the rich of that era. The book describes some of the lavish parties that Alva held, with people desperate for an invitation, and newspapers giving detailed, gossipy accounts of such occasions. Dinner parties were also grand occasions consisting of upwards of five courses. Alva manipulated the newspapers for her own ends and was absolutely insistent that Consuelo would ensnare the Duke of Marlborough. The marriage linked the Vanderbilts with the peerage and ensured a much-needed influx of funds for the Marlboroughs. It was an interesting read. The photo is from the luxury liner, Queen Mary II.

Reading your post makes me want to watch a movie of them. They are rich family with very big names. I'm having trouble pronouncing their names. Marlbo what?

I think the pronunciation is Marl-bo-ru (as in 'ruff'). They were different times back then although there are still many very wealthy families around.

The former Vanderbilt estate in NC the Biltmore is something to see. Anderson Cooper who is a well known correspondent here is the son of Gloria Vanderbilt.

Some of the descriptions of the parties and decorations are barely believable.

Sounds like the plot of a few of the Daily Sops that are telecasted on different TV channels. Yet I no longer watch them. Most just go on and on and sometimes have an abrupt end.

Some of those soaps can have extremely complicated plots. I watched occasionally years ago but haven't watched one now for ages and ages.

I'll bet that was a really interesting read. I used to think that Dukes were the children of kings & queens, I was mistaken.

Having a title depends on your family normally. At least I think that's the case. Some have done absolutely nothing to earn their positions.

It sounds like a good book. I can only imagine the extravagance with the help of such movies as The Great Gatsby.

The marriage didn't last very long though. Next time, she was able to marry for love.

You would love the Biltmore in North Carolina. It's incredible that people owned such a home. It was built by George Vanderbilt. Have a good weekend.

Yes, lots of arranged marriages during that time and still happens today. And many Royal families were united in this manner. Definitely a way to maintain or achieve social status. I found her connection to Winston Churchill famous in his own right, very interesting. I was unaware of the connection.
