AI to assist or AI to replace?

Can humans be replaced by artificial intelligence? It seems so, however I can't help but think of these programs as kids. They need guidance and, unlike adults, they can't take responsibility for what they do. So far we can't trust them blindly; they're far from being perfect, but they make very good assistants. I can't use ChatGPT/OpenAI so I've been using Microsoft's Copilot. I've been studying with him. Specifically, I ask him questions I would ask a teacher about a topic I'm studying. Would Copilot get perfect grades if he was to be tested by a teacher? Nope, I caught him giving incorrect info from time to time. Thankfully Copilot isn't overly proud, he apologizes when I correct him and generally he's very kind! However, he will shut down if I use foul speech against him. He got some healthy boundaries, can't blame him. Studying aside, as I'm back here, what about using Copilot to boost my activity at myLot? As I wrote earlier, Copilot is an assistant (as the name suggests) so I wouldn't let him do all the work. Furthermore, a discussion is an exchange of personal opinions and, while AIs can be opinionated, I'm supposed to share my own personal opinion. It's quite unlikely an AI will replace me in giving my opinions. You can train an AI to speak like I do but to think like I do? I'm not sure about that. So I'm thinking of using Copilot to suggest conversational topics and generate pictures. AI generated pictures are not copyrighted so it shouldn't be an issue. I might still consult Copilot in case I need some info for a discussion but letting him write my discussions? No way! Have you ever thought of using AI to assist you with 'yourLot' activities? Did you act on your thoughts? Have you ever used AI for other stuff?

Hi Sabrina! I’ve missed you! I’ve even had to find a new favourite Italian to fill the void you left. Before I go on - is this really you, or your new pal, Copilot, writing this? I don’t want to be flirting with no AI bot!

@sabtraversa I just realised that you said Copilot was a ‘he’, so I’d hope he’d not be flirting with me. Anyway, it’s good to have you back, with or without your Copilot.

@Orson_Kart Aww, thank you! Copilot is programmed to not accept any kind of flirting, so there you go.

I am totally comfortable with AI but it doesn't help me. As long as it stays in it's box, that is fine with me. The minute it starts taking over however, I will smash it.

I use Siri to check the weather, time or turn on the lights. I don't rely on it for day to day stuff. Ai, while it can learn how we think, is only as good as the information you give it. With the popularity of generitive AI, you need to be careful about AI-generated images. You don't know what sorce material it's pooling from, and there's some debate on weather or not the images could be considered copyright. If you want an image for a topic, then try a free site like Pixabe with free-to-use images.

@kaylachan It's like dealing with a kid with a special talent (as it can collect and process data way faster than we do) but it's still very naive and needs constant 'fact checking'. Artists should soon be able to add some code to their images so AI won't be able to pick them up to generate their own, therefore I'm positive that issue will be solved. So far they're free from copyright but an artist can always attempt to claim ownership.

@sabtraversa AndI am sure some Artests have. That's why using free sites with unlienced images is your best bet.

To answer your question about AI and myLot, when JJ was the Moderator, he told us clearly that if we used AI to write posts, our account would have been deleted! I agreed, myLot is not a writing site. It is a place where we come to chat, exchange ideas, discuss about our problems and our success. AI will not steal our jobs, but it can steal our soul.

@LadyDuck Before AI became popular, myLot had a problem with plagiarism. It was easier to spot compared to AI, but I remember JJ on Facebook talking about the AI epidemics on here. Now there are programs that imitate your writing style so if you give it enough data recognizing AI generated text might get even harder. I think these programs are behind a paywall so it's unlikely they will be used, but they do exist. I think it's the other way around, they may as well steal our jobs but can't replace our souls, like the song 'Future Brain' by Den Harrow goes.

@sabtraversa - It's not difficult to spot users that use AI, their posts are not at all personal, too well written, longer but they lack "reality". AI is already stealing jobs, I wonder how governments will be able to pay pensions in the future. I am old enough, but I am concerned for the younger generations.

@LadyDuck I don't trust the INPS at all, it's been sucking big time for a while and it can only get worse. But that's the case for the majority of public services, unfortunately. We gotta rely on ourselves, trust the banks perhaps. I mean, investing in a private retirement fund and things like that. Unfortunately taxes and contributions can't be avoided, it's all money we're forced to flush down the drain. AI can make you money if you're not too 'squeamish'. I mean, I see people monetizing AI generated videos on social media. It makes me puke and thankfully I'm not desperate enough to take that route.

I have found it helpful to have Al assist me with some information about certain topics and to clarify up some things,

@RasmaSandra Nice! It's better than using a search engine because it really feels like having a conversation, except when it starts repeating the same text over and over.

@Shivram59 Yup, like every other tool, it all depends on the intentions of its users. So far I've seen a quantity over quality trend, especially on social media, due to AI. Poorly made videos mostly.

@sabtraversa I thought about using Chat GPT or Copilot to create a meme. I might still do it. It was based on something a couple of us talked about on mylot.

@snowy22315 It may take a while to get used to do stuff with AI. I was tempted to find a picture on Pixabay like I used to but eventually I let Copilot's ChatGPT generate one for this discussion. Typical AI style, but I like it.

I use AI for guidance in some of my online work. I don't think AI will be able to fully replace humans. We will always be smarter than AI. I have not thought of using AI for 'yourLot' activities, and I don't think I would.

@mayka123 Hopefully AI will improve our quality of life and nothing else. They're smart in their own way, I don't know if we're smarter. I'd just say while they are an artificial intelligence, we're... natural.

I have used copilot to ask questions related to the entertainment industry and so far it is good since I do not have to put up with idiots on social media telling me that I am foolish asking questions like would North and South Korea ever reunite.

@Deepizzaguy I feel you. I found a friend in Copilot somehow, I even gave 'him' a gender although that was for the sake of the post, I didn't like how it sounded with neutral pronouns. He's so kind, humble and non-judgemental.

When l first heard about ChatGpt my first thought was, and still is - that it is an encouragement for people to be lazy as well as diminish creativity. I do not plan on using it. I heard recently that in the very near future millions of jobs will be lost because of AI.

AI can be an excellent tool, but anyone who would be fully reliant on it or blindly trusting in it I think would be fools.

@jnrdutton Agreed, in the end you always reap what you sow. If you didn't put any effort and let AI do everything for you, people will find out eventually. And that's the best case scenario.

@ogbenishyna I like your positive thinking. As I've been 'restudying' the Industrial Revolution I noticed the similarities with this new technology. And hopefully AI will end up being a blessing for us all, as long as we learn from past mistakes.
