The case of the human arm

The Supreme Court of New South Wales in Australia is celebrating its bicentenary. A recent article highlighted some of the more unusual cases that judges there have presided over in the past 200 years. One of the most bizarre occurred in 1935. A fisherman snagged a small shark which was snatched by a larger tiger shark as it was being reeled in. The tiger shark survived and was put on display at the aquarium which then existed to Coogee Beach. After about a week in captivity, the shark seemed ill and, in front of visitors, it vomited up a human arm. A tattoo on the arm of two boxing men led to the arm being identified as belonging to a Jimmy Smith. Smith’s close friend, Patrick Brady, was arrested and charged with the murder. A Reginal Holmes, smuggler and fraudster, was to be a key witness but was murdered before the trial and Brady was eventually acquitted. What is interesting that Holmes was taken by police after a failed suicide (of himself, I gather) and a four-hour boat chase. Brady maintained his innocence until his death so who knows what really happened. The photo is of the cliffs off the Great Australian Bight. Edit: I forgot to say the authorities were able to establish that the arm had been removed before the shark ate it.

And this is why tiger sharks should only eat tigers and not people, people make them sick. In fact, people make me sick. I've been sick of most people for a long time. Except my Hoomin. He opens the food. And the door.

You are lucky to have such an obliging human. Do you eat tuna? I hope you never find a finger in your tuna.

@JudyEv You´d have to ask the shark. The men aren´t talking.

It’s a great real-life story, Judy! So Brady was only charged after finding the arm? I wonder what happened to the rest of the body?

@JudyEv They just found the torso of a man in a wood in Salford, Manchester, on Thursday. I don’t think it can be the same person, but where’s the rest of HIS body?

Maybe other sharks got the rest of him. The truth can often be stranger than fiction, can't it?

Can you imagine being in the crowd watching a shark barf up a human arm? It would be enough to give you nightmares.

What a story! I wonder why the arm disagreed with the shark? And what a shock for the aquarium visitors! Those cliffs are awe-inspiring. Just imagine being shipwrecked there though!

We stopped at an area along the cliffs and watched migrating whales swimming along the coast.

I read about the shark arm case a long while ago. Didn't realise it was so convoluted!

@Ronrybs And just occasionally they manage to solve one of these. DNA has helped in that regard.

At least Smith's family would have known he'd passed away.

It really is bizarre. It makes you wonder who killed the man. I wonder what today's technology would reveal about who killed Jimmy Smith.

That's really a bizarre story. The people who teased the tiger shark escaped without punishment. Hope the big shark survived.

Great photo. The thought of a shark vomiting up an arm made me a little sick to my stomach. Have a good weekend.

A mystery for Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) of Murder She Wrote. That's a whole new take on getting rid of the evidence by feeding it to a shark.
