What Paul Revere looked like. And here he is. The famous portrait of him that hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston oil on canvas, 1768, painted by John Singleton Copley. And Henry Wadsworth Longellow's poem about Paul Revere, called The Fame of Paul Revere: Listen, my children, and you shall hear Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere, On the eighteenth of April in Seventy-Five; Hardly a man is now alive Who remembers that famous day and year. He said to his friend, –“If the British march By land or sea from the town to-night, Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry-arch Of the North-Church-tower, as a signal-light— One if by land and two if by sea; And I on the opposite shore will be, Ready to ride and spread the alarm Through every Middlesex village and farm, For the country-folk to be up and to arm. I remember as a child learning of his famous ride and imagining him flying through the night on a stallion to warn of the coming of the British. I now learn that Paul Revere was no elected official or in any way a politician, just a man who loved his country. How about that, did you know of him? To be honest, I seem to recall a Looney Tunes cartoon with him in it (or history lessons anyway). Sad that I remember cartoon stuff more than what I learned in history classes . Found it:

I also imagined him riding his horse at great speed warning that the British were coming. He's not what I pictured him to look like.

Nope me neither Marilyn. I somehow pictured him rather more dashing.

@RebeccasFarm I agree. This picture doesn't make him look like someone who would jump on a horse and ride through the streets warning about the British

I'm sure Mum used to recite this poem to us. She loved poetry. I have long known about Paul Revere and his ride although I didn't know the details.

Of course, my ancestors were on the side of the British. Still, it seems we had this poem in some anthology.

I ate at a restaurant in Ocean City Maryland that had information on him. It was a yummy buffet. Then I learned about him when my son did cyber school.

William Dawes was the other rider on the famous ride. But Paul got all the pub, lol. And besides, Revere rhymes with hear in Wadsworth's poem.
