1600 calories a day is a lot for someone trying to lose weight

It's less than what the food app shows me with my exercise level. They have me starting at 1705 per day. It changes the more exercise I do. I tried hard all week to get it down to around 1200. However, I need fiber and getting fiber and keeping the calories down isn't easy. Some days it works, some days it doesn't.

@just4him I don't maintain my weight unless I am fairly strict about my calorie intake. I stick to about `1200 at the max, the doctor said that was good so I do. Once a week I have an indulgent dessert and look forward to that as a treat. Sometimes, it's hard to stick to 1200, but most of the time, I can easily make it work, I've been doing this for quite some time. I don't ever, ever want to gain back what I lost...I just don't want to. I hope you can get to where you want to be. I know it isn't easy at all!

@MarieCoyle 1200 is the mininum to keep stuff like your heart ticking well. If you are moving around at all you might want to go a little higher.

You are working at gaining better health. I applaud you. This is exactly 2 weeks since I again decided to go the vegetarian route. And I have cut down on sugar and fatty food like cheese. I do eat sugar- 5 chocolate kisses, a little vanilla ice cream. And during these two weeks I drank sparkling water. That upticked my water intake- very good for me who generally doesn't drink water. It looks like I am about five pounds down. I will need to lose at least twenty pounds before anybody else would notice. My goal is to gain some health. If my weight goes down, go howdy!

@just4him Did you eat more bread than vegies? Is that how you gained weight? I stirred an egg into leftover vegie mix for breakfast and came away hungry. I boiled 2 small potatoes and ate that. Finally did not feel so starved. I have heard of an eat mainly starches like potatoes and yams vegetarian diet and I don't think there is enough protein in it.

Congratulations on losing five pounds. I had to learn to drink water. I have a Brita pitcher and two 32 ounce bottles. I drink one of those a day. Health is important. It's good you're working on it. I tried the vegetarian diet and gained weight. I hope it works well for you.

You are always about the same weight for a while now. Two pounds up and down is not a big deal.

@just4him - You should try to decrease a little the number of calories you get. Using the same approach that worked at first may maintain your weight loss, but it won't lead to more weight loss.

@LadyDuck I'm trying. When I do, I'm usually low on something I need, fiber or sodium. Sodium I don't usually have a problem with, but I did yesterday. I need as close to a thousand mg of sodium as possible. I had less than half, my calcium was also way low, so I had breakfast for supper and took care of the problem.

Your calories consumed are lower than last week, you're persistent to keep them under control! And you exercise faithfully, a big plus. Good job, Valerie:) xo

@just4him I think it is right on target for you. You can't go to 1200 right now..you would be starving and it would backfire..1500 would be a lot more reasonable.

@snowy22315 I think that's where I am most days. Some days are higher, but I'm also getting a lot more steps or working longer on the foot cycle.

I am still hovering around 230. I won't complain. I've slacked on my exercises, and I really haven't put a whole lot of effort in. I did however actually get the dishwasher started. I told myself I would today, and didn't put it off.

I applaud you for all the effort you put into your health. Every day you get in your steps and budget your calories, etc. It's impossible to be 100% all the time and I think it's important to be able to enjoy life and still keep the scale in the back of your mind. Weight fluctuates all the time so overall I think you've done really well.

Thank you. Yes, it fluctuates. I'm keeping a mental note of what works and what doesn't. Yes, I get my steps every day. I have half of them today, so as soon as I get off the computer, I'll get the other half.
