Phone Call From Jail

United States
April 28, 2024 2:21pm CST
Saturday morning, I got a phone call from jail from a nephew, I really don't know. He is my sister's grandson. But I've been told those phone calls can be very expensive.. Well he tried three times and I refused to take the call. I'm sure he wanted money, to put on his book. Now he has other siblings he could call. My sister passed away in February so he can't count on her anymore. He never called before he went to jail or when she passed. Plus, I've never met him, people have a lot of nerve. I feel for him, but won't start that.

That’s smart. He isn’t your responsibility.

That's good not to take his call. I can't stand people who call out of the blue just for money or wanting something else. Otherwise they would never associate with you.

Yep, I mean you could tell him you wish him the best, but you honestly don't have it to spare. It is nervy to come out of the woodwork and ask for cash though.

If you've never met him, how do you know in fact that it was him? This sounds very much like a scam to me. I would ignore any phone calls coming from that number going forward.

It's probably a scam. Don't even think of sending money. He's probably just fine. Are there other mutual relatives you can call to check up on him? Once you're sure he's OK, be sure to call the police.

I didn't even think of that! Do they just call randomly and say they're a relative in jail? Or would they know the details of a relative who actually is in jail and pretend to be them?

@Fleura I heard he was in jail, and nothing more.

@Fleura That is what they do. They pretend to be the person whose name they have bought somewhere. I have known people almost victimized by this scam.

He needs to get a job "inside" if he wants money on his books. He has a lot of nerve calling you.

He is basically a stranger, you shouldn't feel obliged to help.

I think you are right to stay right out of it. If he's never been in touch before, it's a bit late now.

That would be a tricky situation. It's tough to take a call in such situations. But I think that it is a wise thing to not fall for it. It might be a scam. And he is not your responsibility.

It is a tough situation to be in. You know what is in store and any accommodation on your part could have led to more requests for help.

I am facing the same problems. The only difference is that it's not relatives but people who do my paid work like electrician and plumber keep asking for money which I know they will never return.
