A good lesson with my 8-year-old piano student.

I think his mom told me had has been diagnosed with ADHD. I admit that I sometimes think that the ADHD diagnosis simply means "being a boy." But I do get it. This young fella can be pretty "random" at times, but one he gets focused, he's really focused. I Just use patience and conversation to get him back on track. No scolding or anything like that. Today we worked on a classical piece that he brought with him to our lessons from a previous teacher. We focused in on a "hard part" with a couple of sharps in both the left and right hands, and he "got it." I am pooped now and ready for bed. How was your Thursday? I couldn't find my photo of a former 8-year-old client with "ADHD" (focusing on a model airplane we were making), so I'll just post a photo of a rock wall where I take my energetic boy clients hiking.

Hope you had a good rest. We lost the last Appeal and I had to file for a Reconsideration yesterday. Have a good day.

You and your hubby are just a "number" to someone. I hope you win the Reconsideration.

@TheHorse Thanks. I don't have much confidence in this one. I think we'll lose.

Are your "energetic boy clients" about the same age or older? That rock face looks treacherous from my viewpoint. I've hiked up a few mountains and did some actual mt. climbing with equipment too. I've that I hiked was seen from my back yard in NH when I lived there for a year. That one was small. Another I hiked was in the white mts, also while I was in NH, that one took a lot longer. The other hikes and climbing was in NM.

@TheHorse it looks risky to me, but you know the area and I know you wouldn't put your charges in danger.

@MarshaMusselman Precisely. It's good for boys' egos, But nature and I are "in control."

Sounds like a lot of fun. I have never done "technical" climbing (ropes, etc.). The cool thing bout that rock formation is that it looks difficult, but if you choose your route carefully, you can find easy ways up. It's great for my boys because they can feel like they've done something "macho," but without any real risk to them.

Boys are definitely labeled more often. I think I read a book once titled "The Gift of ADHD" and I agree that people labeled this way can be very focused.

Most of the time children cannot focus on something only because they do not like what they are doing.

@TheHorse There were things that I loved to learn and I listened, but when I disliked something I was distracted.

@TheHorse I know a nephew of mine was supposed to have it. So I looked it up and my youngest boy fit more of the markers for it. The difference was I disciplined him when he needed it and my nephew wasn't

Yeppers. In the book "Oh Boy!", one f the few books I've read devoted to male children and male teachers, the author contends that boys are over-diagnoses with ADHD. I have maintained that for years but never written about it.

I'm glad he 'got it'. Kids with ADHD can be quite focused with things that interest them. My oldest has ADHD along with a few other goodies.

I agree. I had an ADHD client who was super-focused when we made model airplanes together.
