It's National Pet Rescue Day

United States

Happy Monday Everyone! we might actually see the sun today Today is National Pet Rescue Day! Normally I don't pay attention to these national "whatever" days but today is one I'll embrace since many of us have rescue pets. When my daughter moved back home after her divorce she brought two special pups with her. It wasn't long before both of them stole my heart. Sadly, Gizmo went over the rainbow bridge last summer but Mush is still going strong and brings lots of love to my life. She's 14 years old already but still has the energy of a pup a lot younger. She's a Maltese and only 12 pounds. On one of the morning tv shows, they had dogs up for adoption. I'm sure every one of those dogs found a new home today. I know many of fellow myLotters have adopted pets so tell me about them...

The ones I have now were searched for. I can't truly call them rescues as they were not in danger. Bambi was the last I rescued. I lost her a few years ago.

@Marilynda1225 I paid for Duke and Patch. Jill was born here. As were the cats I have. Bambi was found on daughters porch 15 years ago now and never left my side after daughter brought her out to me.

I would consider any animal or pet you didn't buy would qualify for today's national day

The only kritter I ever chose was Roscoe, I adopted him from the humane society, all the rest I accidentally found ..... wait, they accidentally found me ...... Tuffy was rescued from Roscoe when he was only 4 weeks old, Roscoe thought he was a squeak toy and probably still does

I would still consider "finding" a rescue compared to buying from a breeder or pet store.

Well you know about Nico. He was a rescued stray living in a vet's office when I saw him. My intent was to adopt him and his brother, but the brother got adopted. So he is an only child who doesn't seem to play well with others unfortunately.

We have clouds moving in now here, and it is awfully muggy. Maybe some pop up storms are coming this way. Nayla, who was our beloved yellow lab, was from a neighbour in the little rural village that we used to live. My hubby was at work 1 day when a co-worker, whose brother and his wife just had pups announced that there were lots free for the taking. He spoke up, that was October, and Nayla came to live with us on Christmas Day. We saved her from being a stray. She used to hear her parents barking from across the field, and we wondered if she recognized the sounds, she seemed to.

I bet Nayla was beautiful and sounds like she was a very loving dog. I bet her arrival on Christmas Day was extra special

@Marilynda1225 It lit up a great big smile on a little 10 year old boy's face that year.

I'm not brave enough to volunteer at a shelter. I'm sure I'd end up bringing a little dog home with me. It's good that people are happy to take rescue dogs and cats.

Just seeing the dogs on tv this morning made me want to adopt them.

I'm sorry Gizmo went over the bridge last year. I missed that article and wondered what happened to him. I'm glad Mush is still a puppy at 14. It's a good day to embrace pets.

@Marilynda1225 Today is Tuesday here so did not know about yesterday being a pet rescue day. Two of my pets were rescues. Enjoy Mush for as long as you can.

They have a Maltese that was found at our local shelter and two Yorkies. I'm so tempted. Our rescue was for two white Pomeranians. I loved them dearly; but one kept escaping under the fence. We finally had to surrender them because we were afraid the one would get hit by a car, attacked by coyotes or stolen by someone. They were adopted almost immediately. Have a good day.
