1976 - Carrie
Carrie is a supernatural horror film adapted from a Stephen King novel. King, 26 at the time, was only paid $2,500 for the film rights but felt fortunate to have his first book made into a movie..
Carrie is a shy, bullied 16-year-old girl with the powers of telekinesis. Carrie gets her period, does not know what is going on and gets mocked by her fellow students. Her abusive and religiously fanatic mother, played by Piper Laurie, says that her period was caused by sin and locks her in the "prayer closet".
One of the bullies gets banned from prom due to another incident involving Carrie; and with the help of several friends, including John Travolta as Billy Nolan, plans revenge against Carrie. What happens next is scary and unexpected.
Spacek received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress; and Piper Laurie, as her mother, Margaret, received a Best Supporting Actress nomination. Some consider Carrie to be one of the greatest horror films ever made.
The film also stars Amy Irving and Nancy Allen.

I love the book much more than the movie, but the movie was fantastic. I think Carrie was the second Stephen King book I ever read, after Christine. And then I followed that up with Cujo and Firestarter. Four fantastic books by a great author!

@moffittjc - Same as you, some movies are really BAD! Another very good book and a terribly bad movie is "Inferno" by Dan Brown.

I have the book, The Stand, to read. I hope it's good because it has about 700 pages.

They are so mean to her in this movie. Spacek is so good in the role. Piper Laurie is great too.

@LindaOHio - Several movies from Stephen King's books are pretty scary. I remember The Shining, The Secret Window, 1408, Pet Sematary. All good movies for Halloween.

@LadyDuck I saw the movie 1408. Never heard of The Secret Window. I don't think I've seen Pet Sematary.

Another good one. And of course another Stephen King one. I always liked the back story of how this novel not only almost never happened, but launched King's career. I am sure you've heard the story.
King had been selling some short stories, many to Playboy, but really wasn't "getting there." He was struggling financially and suffered rejection after rejection. In a moment of despair while writing Carrie he got frustrated and threw the manuscript into his garbage can.
Later, his wife Tabitha saw it in there, fished it out, read it, and told Stephen, "You should finish this one." He did, and the rest was history.

That $2,500 didn't make him rich; but it gave him a foot in the door.

It’s hard to believe that Stephen King writes “normal” things, isn’t it? He wrote the novella that the film The Shawshank Redemption is based on.
I’ve never seen this one nor read the book.

I thought I saw this movie, but maybe not...doesn't sound familiar. Sounds interesting either way....may have to watch it (or rewatch).
