Okay, I have been dealing with Chronic pain for about 6 years now. I have fibromyalgia and get extreme muscel spasams that can last for hours or even days. The pain causes low grade fevers and sleepiness and anxiety. I also have had Upsten Bar which is a rare form of mono that you never really get rid of that causes a low immune system and even more tiredness. Through out my entire illness I have been perscribed so many different pills for pain and depression it was riddiculus. I could get anything. All anti-depression medication made me go wacko, and the pain killers helped at first but when I took them all the time I noticed that I would think I was superwoman and do to much only to have to take another after the other wore off. Also I felt all drugged up all the time and hated it. So now I quit everything. No more than an alieve will I take and only if absolutely necessary. Now I get a massage when necessary and do relaxation exercises and feel better. Anyone else feel that pills are not the answer out there??????

I was diagnosed with Fibro in '99. I have had it all my life. My story is long but will try to keep it as short as possible. I am currently fighting disability due to Fibro and so far losing. My doctor gives me a different pill everytime I see him and Nothing seems to help. I think Anti-depressants just make you depressed and you get immuned to pain medication so its like taking a tylenol. I have been on very strong pain patches and was addicted to them for awhile, but finally weaned myself off them. I have lost my insurance, have no money coming in, and disabillity seems thinks that I can work. And I sense in people that I talk to that they don't believe the pain I describe to them. I have been a very independent person until now. Now Ihave to have help from my family. I lost my Mom in Sept. suddenly to a heartattack and my Dad has Emphysema. I almost lost him in Oct. I feel like my life is on a downhill rollercoaster with no way up and I don't know what to do. Well anyway, I do agree that pills just make things worse and peoples attitudes don't help either. I however can't handle massage, I can't stand the pain of being touched.

Yeah I have to have a very gentel massage and it hurts at first and will hurt for a while afterward but in the long run it helps me more. I understand what your going through fighting disability. I have an Aunt with fibromyalgia fighting for it now. Really the only reason they give it to fibromyalgia patients is not so much for the illness but more due to the kind of medications you take for it and if the medications are the reason that you are unable to work. I wish you lots of luck.

I've had Fibromyalgia for 20 years now, and narcotics have always made my condition worse. I get real tense and sore all over the next day. The best thing that works for me is lots and lots of ibuprophen, drinking lots of fluids, and to keep active. Being active is very difficult for me because of the chronic fatigue, so shorts walks work. Pills are not the answer, especially anti-depressants like they say. It'll screw with your mind eventually, but everyone is different. And if you're on an awful amount of medication, the doctors should rethink it because of liver problems in the future.

I completely agree. It seems like doctors never cure anything any more; they just give you another pill. I tried quitting all of mine once, and I got very sick and very depressed. I ended up in the hospital until they could get me regulated again. I don't have anything very severe, either. I have borderline hypertension, depression, and allergies, and I've been prescribed 5 different pills, 2 inhalers, nasal spray, and eye drops. My hair is thinning, and my beauty operator says that the medicines I take are probably the culprit. I wish I could quit them, because I don't want to take them for the rest of my life, but I don't know if they're really helping anything or if I just imagine they do.

No, pills are not the answer. There are so many other forms of therapy, yours with massage and relaxation therapy. Medication can be addictive. Also, if you are taking them for a long period, you body can also become immune to them and they won't help anyway, so you just end up taking more.

Wow I am so sorry. I have chronic fatigue syndrome and recently found out I have a liver problem. I wish I could take tylenol because I am in pain a lot but I was advised not to. I am going to try to use relaxation exercises and I am also seeing a homeopath. Lets see how it goes.

I had six back surgeries and had a lot of nerve damage. For years I was popping methadone for the pain (last longer and they said less addictive)In the end I ended up in a pain clinic where I learned to meditate and knowing my limits.

Congratulations. From what I have heard it is very hard to get off pain killers. I think that doctors way over perscribe them.
