Why do my golden retriever's ears smell?

My dog has a problem with ears that smell bad all the time. If I clean them out daily it isn't too bad but sometimes its just rank. He doesn't seem to be in pain, but he does sometimes scratch his ears and shake his head. I tried the vinegar, water application mentionned above, but now he runs away from me when I try to wash his ears with that. We really cannot afford to go to the vet at this point. Like I said he doesn't seem really uncomfortable, but I don't know what to do.

You should call the local animal shelter and find out if there is a low cost or free animal clinic you can take your dog to because it sounds like he may have some kind of ear infection or ear mites.

The hair inside the golden retriever's ears is typically longer than many other dogs. Cocker spaniels have this issue also. That hair locks in moisture which in turn, breeds bacteria. The vinegar you are putting in his ears probably stings. You can try some olive oil that is warmed slightly, put it in his ear, massage the base of the ear and let it drain. I would avoid anything caustic or acidic, like hydrogen peroxide or vinegar as these tend to sting. You should do what you can to take him to a vet as this can lead to deafness if left untreated.

Thank you, I got some inexpensive drops at the store and they worked immediately and also removed the smell, made especially for this type of dog.

Make sure that the hair inside his ears is kept clipped and cleaned. If he's pawing at his ears or shaking his head, I'd take him to his vet.

It sounds like he has ear mites. I would try treating him for that. You can buy a cheap over-the-counter treatment & try that. If that doesn't work, I would suggest trying to take him to the vet. But that treatment should work.

you sound like you know dogs too... was going to suggest this myself and its easy to treat can use baby oil it will work.. to tell if its mites fold the ear back and have a good look inside if you see very little spots look like little dots thats for sure mites. just keep wiping with the oil they will soon clear up.don't pour it in just wet a cloth and wipe inside.good luck with your dog...

Yes, I have 4 dogs right now & a vet book that's always being opened. Also, I had a German Shepherd/Collie mix dog before that had ear mites & so I know the symptoms.

You might try looking at the pet store to see if they have any kind of an ear wash solution. I have a shepard / chow mix who has ear problems and our vet gave us a solution that I squirt in his ears twice / week to keep them clean. You might be able to find something similar at the pet store.

I actually found some stuff for combination of ear wax and mites at the pet store. It's drops...10 per ear...every two weeks as needed. They worked IMMEDIATELY. Some black wax came out as soon as I applied it, actually lots, and the smell has been gone for three days now, without returning. thanks!!

If his ears smell bad, that definitely means he has an ear infection. I learned about that during our puppy class with my Golden. If you can't afford to go to the vet, try googling about dog ear infections and see what you can find to treat it yourself. Hope he starts feeling better!

When my lab gets ear infections, you can tell by the smell and also if you rub his ears, he will whine a bit and moan. AND he will push his ear hard into your hand. I am sure you can find something over the counter to help him. Good luck!

Try giving them a wipe out with a cotton wool ball with some tea tree oil on it. I have dogs with floppy ears too and they get stinky but the tea tree oil fixes it almost straight way. Tea tree oil is an antibacterial, and broad spectrum antifungal. You can get it in walgreens in USA

Ok what you need to do is clean his ars regular and get some ear drops as Golden Retrievers or most large Dogs do have Problems with ear Mites so get a grip now before it gets to bad and I also agree contact an animal Shelter here in the UK the RSPCA actually gives Vouchers to people like me to help towards the cost But in the meantime keep cleaning and get some drops My Labrador used to suffer with it to

Chelsey & Boomer - Chelsey and Boomer, my two beagle dogs
He might possibly have an ear infection, maybe not bad enough yet, so that it would hurt him. But in the long run, it probably will. The best thing to do, would be to bring him for a check up. Since for now, you can't afford that, you might want to try and call your vet, or any other for that matter, and explain the situation. Ask if they have a special solution to was his ears. They will be glad to give you advice and it won't cost you a dime! They might tell you to bring him to your vet though. Good luck.

His infection is deep within the ear. You will have to put antibiotics in it to get rid of it. These particular types of dogs are known for ear infections. While you're getting it clean on the surface, down deep he's infected. Get some meds from the vet. Word of warning, if you leave it he can become deaf and even get what they call an ear hemotoma, which is a swelling of the outter ear caused by the dog whipping his head around and scratching it. The fix for this is hundreds of dollars, surgery. Get his ear cured now and avoid the extra money!!!!!!

hehe, you seem to love doggies as much as I do. Anyway, after reading all this stuff I am pretty sure it's an infection but I am not sure how we are going to fix it yet.

When you clean his ears is there dried blood? A black waxy substance? These are indications of a mite infestation. He could have an infection that you can not see, or he could simply have hair deep inside his ears that are clogged with wax. I agree with all that say consult a vet.

I think he may have ear mites. And, if it goes untreated correctly, it can become an infection and he can become deaf. If you cannot afford a vet, please please go to the shelter near you. They will help. If it were your child, would you not go to the doctor because you could not afford it? Your dog needs your help. Borrow the money if you must.
