How many horses should you have? How many are too many? Horses die, so you should probably have backups, but how many?

It depends what social class you aspire to, of course, but for most of us, the correct answer is 7. How do I figure? If you recall, the Bennett family in Pride in Prejudice needed to maintain a "coach and six." So there, you need 6 for that, plus the spare, since you are right that they do die. I know in some families, each family member insists on having their own horse. But really, come on! That's going too far! I think the head of the family needs to put his foot down.
