I was having these pains in my lower back for weeks. I thought maybe I just pulled a muscle or something like that. Well it kept going on and going on and just seemed to get worse and worse. It sent pains down into my knee and into my foot. Well I finally went to the emergancy room to see what was going on. Well she told me I had Sciatica. I was like oh, ok? What is that? She said it is a pinched nerve caused by a slipped disk. It also said in this info I found it is most common in people age 30-50...well I am only 21!!! I was just wondering if anyone else has this same problem and if so what are you doing to comfort the pain? Any tips for me?? Thanks... Low back pain and/or leg pain that usually travels down the large sciatic nerve, from the lower back down the back of each leg, is generally referred to as sciatica and is fairly common. This pain can be caused when a nerve root in the lower spine that helps form the sciatic nerve is pinched or irritated. Sciatica is usually caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve from a herniated disc (also referred to as a ruptured disc, pinched nerve, slipped disk, etc.) in the lumbar spine. The problem is often diagnosed as a "radiculopathy", meaning that a disc has protruded from its normal position in the vertebral column and is putting pressure on the radicular nerve (nerve root) in the lower back, which forms part of the sciatic nerve.***Sciatica occurs most frequently in people between 30 and 50 years of age. Often a particular event or injury does not cause sciatica, but rather it may develop as a result of general wear and tear on the structures of the lower spine. The vast majority of people who experience sciatica get better with time (usually a few weeks or months) and find pain relief with non-surgical treatments.***

Hi, I had started a my own discussion on this a few days ago, guess I had not done a thorough enoguh search to find yours. I am new to MyLot and still finding my way around . Well, I just went looking for mine . it must have gotten deleted!I am still trying to deal with sciatica. I have medication to control the pain. I also see a Chiropractor. He has done some acupuncture, as well show me some exercises that I should do everyday . I also have an appointment with a physical therapist soon. So,I hope that this will be a thing of the past soon, and that I can get on with my life.

slipped disc - condition that is not fun at all, affects our work, driving, housework, and raising children.
Hello, sorry to hear your problem. My back has a disc that will slip out of place if I work too much and tire myself too much. Also must keep my stomach muscles more firm to support my lower back. When it goes out...oooooh boy..do not wish to go through it again. I must rest and stay pretty immobile and if I can relax deeply enough and the area is not inflamed as a result of the local trauma it will slide back into place. Then I must move slowly to give my body a chance to adjust and firm up again after the immobility. Good luck and I hope you have a decent doctor! Surgery does not seem to help many people from what I have heard.

back pain - lower back pain sufferer
I had a similiar situation before also. Suffering from lower and upper back pains. When my back pain became un bearable I decide to get alterantive treatments. I try not to ever take medicines and surgery was far from my mind. What I did was looked into Hijaamah/ cupping. It a non-painful procedure done by a person who is qualified. They places suction cups or the specified area then take a razor and just make small slits in the sucked area to drain what is known as bad blood or sick blood. It is so unpainful and in my case it worked for me. This procedure is used for many types of conditions, I am sure it might can work for you condition. Also many people turn to acupuncture for an alternative to medicines and surgery. I hope you find a good treatment the sciatica.

You're so right. My sciatica was caused by a slipped disc and a microsurgery had to be done on my back because of a really bad herniated disc. It was an unforgettable, excruciating, terrible pain I experienced and I was bedridden/immobile for 3 weeks till I decided on the operation. I'm ok now but I still get leg pains if I sit or stand too long. The pain though is quite tolerable and I am just happy it was not like the pain I had before. Slipped disc happens to all age groups, so just be careful with your back. Somehow sometime you might have made a wrong move (like when picking up things). If you need to bend down, bend your knees first. Also if you need to pass something to someone at your back, turn around your whole body, don't twist your back and shoulders. Before and after bed, do a straight leg stretch (one leg at a time) about 20 times each.

Hi there, I just read your discussion. I recently joined and so didn't know how to find this other info on back pain. So, I started one on the same subject. What has worked for me so far is ibuprofen (prescription strength), a heating pad and epidural or 'facet' injections. They injected my back with a steroid at three different visits, and it is supposed to work for up to 6 months. It has helped alot. I still have pain, but at least it is bearable. I have a herniated disc, arthritis, and degenerative disc disease. I have no idea why someone only 21 is having sciatica. Did they do an MRI? Has it gotten any better?
