I believe they used to do it in the "olden days" before garland was manufactured and sold in stores.

Yes it was done before garland and even after garland came out, it is fun to string it up and hang it outside and watch the birds feast on it.

We have never done this. It is something that I would like to try someday with my kids though. Currently they are too young (ages 4 and 2). The needle has to be SOOO sharp to be able to string the popcorn. I would hate for them to poke their little fingers and be scared of doing it again.

Most of the time I bag of kernels like you would use to make on the stove or in an air popper and just use my microwave popcorn popper, that way I get the convenience and speed of the microwave but I can add the amount of butter or whatever topping I like to my taste. I used to have a hot air corn popper and I loved it. I have no idea where it went either. I have made popcorn on the stove but it can be such a pain to do it that way.
