I am very interested in learning web design, HTML, and Css graphics, or how to design graphics myself. My question is do I need a specific program, or schooling to do this, or can it be self-taught. If you have any suggestions, links, or ideas, they would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Kscott, There is a guy VINOD, who would be somewhere here in myLot too. Vinod Paulson knows a great deal about the things you have mentioned. I too wanted to learn and had been striving for almost two years. [June 2004] I wanted to design a website that would give free guidance to people who seek medical help in the specialty that I have been practicing. I found that learning by my own was economical, no tuition fees, and interesting too. However I started spending too much time over the net in front of the pc. I was learning web designing (A pharmaceutical company had given a CD titled "Create Your Own Website"). I worked day and night. I had to attend my clinical practice during the day and the remaining time was devoted to the enthralling world of computer art. I used to call any one and every one that I knew who was studying computers to sit besides me. I recall Rishabh, from Rajasthan, India, and I sat on weekends. He was from Indian Institute of Technology, IIT (Mumbai) a premier Institute in India, akin to Harvard. We slept, ate, and worked together. I soon realized that I was spending a substantial time in learning the A B C of web technology at the cost of my medical practice and preparation for seminars. "Should I pay someone and get the website done?" I often pondered. Most people who were into the profession quoted stiff fees. I did not like to bargain with them because a work of art is priceless. Whatever price someone quotes is for his expertise and I respected them as professionals. So neither did I design myself and complete the project, nor did I hire and pay anyone. I was despondent. Mr. Vinod happened to be introduced because I remarked to a friend that I was having some problem installing some software or some other trivial matter related to hardware, I do not recall, which one it was. I introduced himself as web developer. I asked him if he could help me complete the project of designing a website that would offer free medical service online. He willingly obliged. I met Vinod two months ago and what I was trying by myself for two years was executed with beauty as though with divine intervention. The moral of the story is better turn to vinodpaulson@gmail.com where you can meet a loving kind young person who is a master, a pro in the field, which you as well as I love. Have great fun, drashok 12 - 12 - 2006 [I still have my TRIAL website pages kept with me, but I am shy at showing or seeing the childlike simple designs done by me. When one looks at a website it appears a child's play, but it does take a lot of intensive learning time.]

Thank you for your response. Is the man you speak of willing to show you how, via the internet, or does he have tutorial website that can teach you. I probably should have mentioned that in my post...I want to find a free tutorial website without buying a program such as Dreamweaver..etc. So is your website up and running....send me the link and I'll take a look...I wont judge....everyone has to try and learn new things...I'm sure it's not childish....everything we do is trial and error!! Thanks again!

Well the only thing I can add to you, besides what all people already wrote, that you can learn anything by yourself, is that you check on www.sf.net, it is a website with a lot of open-source software, you will probably find a lot of things to help you develop web pages. And if you want to advance a little more, I recommend you to learn php or ruby on rails, php even on a basic level, if you pretend to play with CMS. Good luck for you, if you need any help, please feel free to ask.

I think an old version of Dreamweaver might work well for you and will be cheaper than the current version (maybe try ebay?) I bought a relatively cheap version on ebay and it is excellent. I have Macromedia Studio which incorporates Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks and Freehand. Using all of these together can help you build something really special. It is far more important though, to make sure that your site can be seen by search engines. Take a look at my blog, it is designed to help to get visitors to your website, no easy routes though - it's all about hard work and good content. http://www.livewyre.blogspot.com

Good idea. Definitevely trying e-bay is a must do. Also, I will say again, look in sf.net. It is a great repository for programs, opensource the majority of them. Good luck

I do all of my own programming. I use frontpage and dreamweaver. These two are the most simple to me. Once you start you will love it. I seem to learn something new everyday.

it can definitely be self-taught. most of the languages i know i learned only through reading and practice. i recomend buying books or reading a lot of online e-books. practice is also the key--you can use dreamweaver or microsoft's web expression to get you started. :)
