Dead Beat Dads and the Media

United States
December 13, 2006 5:44am CST
Yesterday on the news they posted the TOP TEN DEAD BEAT DADS in our city asking for information on their whereabouts and fortunately one has already been arrested owing over $95,000 in back child support. Do you think it is right for the media and the Attorney General's Office to post the faces of these men on television or should we leave it to the individuals to find this without involving the media. What are your views?

I think it is a great idea. I'm not sure if it will teach any of them a lesson, but at least they may be found.

Many probably won't like my take on this subject, but I think it's wrong. In the past few years, deadbeat dads have been treated like murderers on the news. I'm sorry, but they DIDN'T murder anyone. Nor did they rob anyone at gunpoint. They just failed to pay their half of a child. It takes 2 to make a child. But how many deadbeat moms have you ever heard of? The answer is none. The woman almost always gets custody, which means the dad's gonna have to pay or go to jail. This is so cockeyed and one-sided, yet people act like it's somehow fair. Now I'm not saying the dads shouldn't pay for their share. I'm saying that the system works in favor of the mom almost always. Throwing a dad in jail is stupid. He can't make any money to pay for the child. But yet prosecuters, cops and the like love to ridicule and incarcerate deadbeat dads as some kind of sport. I know ALOT of single mom's who don't work, but collect welfare, child assistance, AND child support from the daddy. And they live on just this. Heck, they can even get low or free rent just for havin a kid. Now you tell me, who'd the criminal here?

Deadbeat parents are deadbeats, all the same. Either way, they should have their faces plastered all over the country and arrested for non-payment. Have you ever noticed that most of the deadbeat parents are also ABSENT parents, meaning not only are they neglecting to financially support their offspring but they aren't emotionally, spiritually, physically or otherwise supportive or involved at all? When statistics show what it cost to raise a child, you may realize that the amount set is nowhere near even 1/2 of what it costs to raise a child, financially... plus, whoever is raising them is also supporting them in every other way and sadly, alone : (

You're right to a point, but I have seen pictures of mom's on the deadbeat list as well. But usually it's a dad. The thing is though, those guys that owe 50,000 and such, 9 times out of 10 they can usually afford it. But they just choose not to pay it. Before it wasn't always mandatory to take it out of their pay checks. I wish I would've done that instead of counting on my ex to send it in lol. The whole system is a big joke, and the only time the states do anything like really going after mom or dad that owes, is if the parent is on welfare, because the state wants their money.

I agree to a point. I think they should go after more deadbeat moms. We pay a good bit in child support for my husbands first child. She does not work and gets welfare also. What she gets from us is enough to pay her car note and insuranceand then she gets everything else she needs from the state. She lives with her mother also so she really has no bills. But I still think that the ones that don't pay should be sought after.

Those men should be held accountable for their actions and if the media gets involved, good.

I feel they get what they deserve, to many dads get away with this or just paying very little till the kids are 18 then its even harder to get back pay, something else should be done the system does not work, there are to many ways to cheat it!

This is a good thing for those that do not pay the support. Putting their name in the newspaper would help too. One thing is that it should be that if they pay support they have to tell the employer so that they can send it to the correct place. You work you pay.

you bet, I think it's AWESOME. These dads are leaving everything up to the moms, the least they can do is help with monetary support. Most of the deadbeats don't ever see their kids or help in any way with raising them. It's just like they say, either put in the time or put in the money. Think if you were a single mom with kids, working and trying to raise them properly when your ex hides to keep from helping out.

I had to deal with this first hand and truly understand how hard it is to raise children on one income. Thank you for contributing

I think it is a great idea. It will make them think twice about doing it again. also if there are other guys out there thinking about not paying there child support it will also make them think twice about it if they ever want to get a date ever again. Having your mug placed in the media every one in that area will know what you look like and will not want to have anything to do with you. Wish they could do that for my sons father.

We are in close to the same area of Texas. They posted it on the news in our county also. I think it is great they do it. They should support their offspring and not leave it up to the women.

about time something is done, now to watch my bro-in-law get put on TV. $38k in child support is what he owes... which is over a year's income for my sister, so it would help her a LOT.

Hopefully your sister will collect what is owed to you soon. If she has not already advise her to check with her local Attorney General office usually they do all the paperwork for free
