Definitely necessary. I can't afford to fix the road in front of my house, filter the water, pick up the garbage, clean the sewage, hire emergency crews to put out fires in my neighbourhood so they don't burn down my house, hire security, plow the roads, install the electrical system and all the other things required to make it possible for me to live. If I pool my money with my neighbours, however, we can easily afford it. That's the essence of taxation. I would rather have high taxes and have all the services we need than pay less and have to pay for things out-of-pocket or know that my neighbours are suffering.
