Its happened to me twice this week. The shop assistant doesn't realise shes forgotten to scan one of my items and i get it for FREE. The first time it happened i said something so she redid the total, but today i just pretended i hadnt noticed and walked out the store. Got an outfit for free. Now ive got the guilts! Is it wrong? It isnt my fault she didnt scan it, so why should i pay if shes silly enough to give it to me for free?

The question should not be who's fault it is but see it as a test and it does not belong to you and to be honest, go and give it back.

The firsttime I did, but if it repeatedly happens why should I have to constantly waste my time and effort for someone elses mistake?

It is not to say it is stupidity always... but it could have been us and we all make mistakes.

I know not all the mistakes that happen are peoples stupidity, and I do understand that we are all only human and make mistakes, me more often than others I'd say, but its still frustrating...

Even if it happened repeatedly? I'm glad you all have so much time and energy to chase after people and their stupidity. I do feel a little guilty, but at the same time, I was happy to pay for it, I didnt ntentionally not pay for it, so why am I to blame? Hmmm...

I think if you realized that an item wasn't paid and didn't mention it the next time you make a purchase, that's some sort of stealing. It happened to me when I was in grade school. The cashier forgot to scan one of the chips but I realized it in the afternoon. I've eaten the chips and all but when I went back there after 2 days, I mentioned it to the cashier and asked to pay for it. It felt good and I know it was right.

Yes it is stealing. We (that is my parents have thought me and their children ,when I was a child) have been brought up not to even pick up unattended things that don't belong to us. If you knew it at the time of the billing and did not point it oit, then yes it is stealing. I'd suggest that during your next visit to the store you take the outfit and the bill and inform the person who's at the desk about it. Remember, the dress belongs to a company that sells it until you pay for it, and not the checkout counter person, who should be more careful. You'll also win a few brownies points in goodwill with the store, besides assauging your conscience and getting rid of the guilt. You'll feel good as a matter of fact.

This is a good topic with many different opinions. I can honestly say that I rarely look at my receipts, but if I did, and noticed the item wasn't listed, I sure as heck wouldn't go back to ask to pay for someone's mistake, especially with Christmas crowds. Heck no! If it was any other day, I probably wouldn't either. They have a job, and should pay closer attention. In my opinion, it's not my problem, it's theirs.

Youknow it was wrong other wise you wouldn't feel guilty. It is stealing plain and simple. You took something from a store without paying for it. True that was not your intention, but the moment you chose to pretend you didn't notice is the moment you decided to steal it. People, especially cashiers are human and make mistakes. As a decent human we should not take advantage of those that make mistakes. You should pay for it because it doesn't belong to you unitl you do pay for it. Until that point it belongs to the store not the cashier. I'm not sure how the store would react if you tried to return it or go pay for it, but I think your guilt will keep hounding you until you deal with it. Good Luck.

Thanks for your advice, I do agree with you, but wanted to push the point with the other responses as they were minimal at best... I'm planning on going back this afternoon and explaing what happened. Its just frustrating as I cant really afford the petrol to go back, and at the time I didnt pay all that much attention as I was preoccupied with my son who I was rushing home to have a sleep... I do understand that people make mistakes but its still annoying nonetheless. Thanks for a well thought out and contributing response, I appreciate it...

well if you're confortable with the guilt which you feel then follow your heart but i think you should return it and as well tell the management of that place to heck on the girl cause if she has done same to you twice i wonder what she must have been doing for her other customers.

I don't think the cashier is doing the testing, I think it is God.

I would still call it a stealing since you noticed it and just pretended to ignore it.

That is stealing. You didn't pay for the item, and took it, there is no other way around it, it is stealing. People make mistakes, and this is the busiest time of year for retail. Hopefully security won't see you one of these times and you won't be charged. I don't think that the cashier forgot would be a good explanation to the store manager and/or police.

Although technically it may be stealing I would not feel guilty about it if I were u. Obviously this sales assistant is very absent minded. Actually I am surprised you noticed, you must be keeping an eye on people!

I dont think she intended to do that. You really should tell the next time... it may not be stealing but not saying anything when you know that you are suppose to pay for it is still not right...

It happens way too often especially at the supermarkets. I actually point it out when I notice it. The big chains make so much money most people keep quiet. If you look up the word stealing it basically states is is something that is taken secretly dishonestly and with intent. Under that definition no. But good to hear someone else has gone through the same feelings

I have discovered after I got home that something wasnt on the receipt and I went back and showed them their mistake. Honesty is the only way to live with ourselves.

No...I wouldn't say it's cheating. These things happen to people everyday..and many don't say anything. I think that you told her once...and that should have alerted her that she was missing items and if it didn't then maybe she should not be working as a cashier. If she missed yet another item..then that is her mistake...and if you got it for free..then that is her mistake also.....she should watch what she is doing....

She will get reprimanded/fired for this stuff eventually. It's going to mess their inventory up a bit. I'd feel pretty guilty. If I hadn't noticed then no harm no foul. But if I knew it and snuck out I'd feel weird about it. It was her mistake though - so I guess you didn't technically do anything wrong.

its the cashiers fault...its her/his job to ring up every item...how hard is it? not that hard at all, so if she slips and makes a mistake, she/he should pay for it...

i don't think it's technically stealing because, for what it's worth, you had intended to pay for it, right? the cashier just made a mistake and wasn't able to scan it. i think only women can really understand the impact of getting an outfit for FREE! hehehehehe but still, there's that guilty feeling that you have knowing that the shop assistant might end up paying for at the end of the day... that's probably why it feels like stealing.
