Girls Growing up too FAST!

Does your daughter or daughters still play with barbies, or baby dolls? Is it just me or are girls growing up so much faster than they used to. My oldest is 10 soon to be 11, and my youngest just turned 7. My oldest acts more like a teenager. She was into the Bratz dolls, but the last time I bought one was almost a year ago...and they are still in their boxes. My youngest on the other hand is always playing with barbies, my little ponys, and anything princess. My oldest is now the hardest to buy for. It seems like little girls are trying to grow up sooo fast. Do any of you other parents out there feel the same way?

My daughter just turned 6 and she already threw her dolls to the side. She is into clothes, and doing her hair, and watching Disney's " That's so Raven", "Hannah Montana". She did not even want to see any of the new animated movies like "Flushed Away", etc. She is way above her class in Kindergarten, and just acts like a little adult. I guess it's a mix between T.V. and us. With families having to have both parents work, and all of the new gadgets and shows, they become independent sooner. Have you ever met a 6 year old girl that just wants clothes for Christmas? I got her a bike for her birthday and it has been ridden once. She might get dirty. She was quite tomboy up until this year. Baffles me.

Yes, kids in general, especially girls, are growing up much too fast. I think its because they are exposed to many things at a very young age, which isn't neccesarily good.

I always loved dolls and personally I think it´s a shame when I see 9 or 10 year old strutting about in a boob tube and short skirt and wearing make up. Childhoods seem to get shorter because of peer pressure and what children deem to be acceptable. I think a 8 year old having a boyfriend is uncomfortable and a child wearing make up or adult type clothing isn´t good. I think it´s probably worse in cities, in towns and villages I guess kids have fewer friends nearby or things to do so they have to entertain themselves, play more and, well, be kids!! I am not speaking as a mother because I don´t have children but if I did, I´d want them to treasure and enjoy their childhoods, not to rush through them. I loved Barbies but my sister was a real tomboy and loved HeMan and boy stuff! I guess every little girl is different.

I agree every it does differ between cities, and smaller towns. We live in a smaller town and have lived here most of my oldest daughters school years. We did move to a bigger city for a year and a half....and was there a difference. The little girls were talking about stuff that I didn't hear about until I was much older. I was shocked at some of the stuff her friends did. It was actually the norm for the little girls in 4th grade to lose their virginity...I was in shock...needless to say my daughter wasn't allowed out much and I was very happy to move back to our little town. Thanks for your response.

they seem to be growing up fast before our very eyes, indeed. my 3-year old niece is interested in lipsticks (though she really doesn't wear it because we wouldn't let her), jewelry, and she gets starstruck when she sees orlando bloom and troy (of high school musical). but she still plays with barbies, though.

but what can parents do with the constant bombardment from media? any suggestions on how we can deal with this? i don't have kids yet but i plan to in the future, and the prospect that my children, boys and girls alike, will be growing up in a culture where "promiscuous girls" is constantly played on the radio, is scary. right now i have 4 young nieces. one thing parents (and aunts like me) can probably do is to constantly communicate with the young ones. we should also remind our children and ourselves constantly about the joy of play, of growing up as a child, of core values that hopefully, we'll fortify them against endless media and peer pressure to grow up before they're ready.

Kids are under more pressure at this point in history to grow up faster than they should. Kids should be kids as long as possible. They will spend enough time in their life being mature and grown up. You can only be a kid one time.

My daughter (who is now 10) stopped playing with babydolls at about 7 years old. She had been playing with Bratz dolls since then but just as your oldest she does not really want to play with them anymore. When asked now what she wants for Christmas the answer I get is "a cell phone, makeup, jewelry" these are things my teenager asks for. I agree, little girls ARE growing up too fast, and I think alot of it has to do with society as a whole. Look at the little girls section in the clothing store of your choice, some of the "outfits" they have there should be worn by NOBODY under age 18. Sorry if I upset anyone....just how I feel. Too much "adult" in "little kids world".

I totally agree with you...I too get shocked when I see some of those outfits. Its like we are telling our kids to grow up instead of just letting them be kids. I can't believe some of the clothing and the way some of the girls dress now days. Its crazy! Thanks for your response.

Yes I think that kids these days are trying to grow up too fast. I think that sometimes it's peer pressure though. They hear other kids at school saying that playing with a certain thing is stupid and for smaller kids, so they think that they are to old to play with it.

I played with barbies until I was 15 years old lol. THta may sound wierd but I liked all the other stuff girls do at that age. I just enjoyed barbies too. I have a sister who is 3 years younger than me so I played with her. But after I stopped, she did too and since she has always acted older than me. I'm postivie she'll be married before me. So yes, I'm not a mother but I do think girls are growing up to fast. They shouild learn to enjoy childhood. It's gone way to fast as it is.

girl - girl growing up to fast.
Though most girls still get their periods at age 12 or 13, recent studies show a trend toward an earlier onset of puberty.

My daughter who's 10, told me she no longer wants to buy dolls or toys. She's now into bags, shirts, shoes. Although books are still always on her list. I guess, they're really growing so fast nowadays. Though I fear that one day, when she no onger neees my advice for her things.
