Backpacking through Europe

It has always been my dream to go backpacking in Europe. Italy, Spain, Greece, France, England, Poland... these are just some of the places I'd love to visit in Europe, and I'm sure there are still lots of little known places that will blow me away. If you've tried this already, I would appreciate it if you could share your experience, as well as helpful tips on how to best go about backpacking in Europe. Can you recommend websites or good reading material on the subject? Or if you haven't done it, but would like to do it, what are your thoughts on this?
