An American study linked life spans with sleep amount and found that those who sleep 4 to 7 hours live longer lives, with those sleeping less than 4 or more than 9 hours having about a 30% increased chance of early death, similar to moderate obesity[1]. This study is highly controversial however, and The National Sleep Foundation maintains that 8 hours of sleep is optimal, claiming improved performance in tests, reduced risk of accidents and a better immune system.[citation needed] A widely publicized 2003 study[2] performed at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine demonstrated that cognitive performance declines with less than eight hours of sleep.

I read this in my psychologie book too, this man said 7 to 8 hours gave the best results. Having a breakfast daily, not smoking, little drinking and regular exercise were also named.

I've always required a good amount of sleep. But, as I've gotten older,I've noticed my internal clock is working differently. Where I used to sleep 8 or more hours, I now usually sleep 6 or 7. I stay up late, and will wake up early. I am from a long line of people who live into their 90's. My Mother is 91. But, I don't know about their sleep patterns.

I am a "ole bear" if I don't get my 8 hours of sleep and here lately I have only gotten six or so. I just cannot sleep. I am so tired when I go to bed at 10 but cannot go to sleep. For example, last night, I had to get up and crocheted until midnight and then went to bed and was able to go to sleep. I woke up at 6:15 but was so tired I had to lay there and dozed until 7. So today I will be draggy and feel yucky most of the day because I didn't get my full sleep and I cannot take a nap through the day or I will be up more through the night. LOL God bless you!

This is a very good information. Thank you very much. I can hardly sleep even though tired. But it's not insomnia. Perhaps I just think too much because of my projects of translation of the Word of God from Greek to English and the Alpha Omega Seniars Intl Foundation, Inc. for senior citizens, widows, orphans, disabled, poor intellectuals, etc. I usually sleep 2 to 5 hours and I don't at all feel sleepy or weak. Never in my life, even when I was young (I'm now 61), have I slept many hours, I mean more that 5 hrs.
