A memorial is generally a monument, which can be a statue or a building, dedicated to someone who did something signifigant, i.e. a leading member of a town, a political offical who was well respected, a military person or someone similar to these. A memorial can also be a service for someone who was well respected and did good works in the community.
This photo is of the Australian War Memorial in our capital, Canberra, and is dedicated to those who served our country in times of conflict.
