Boxing Day gets its name from a time when tradesmen who had served large houses during the year would come around, the day after Christmas Day, and bring boxes with them. The owners of the houses would put gifts in the boxes for them. You might say it was like the tipping system used in restaurants; in this case it only happened once a year. Sometimes the houseowners would give money, sometimes gifts. It has no religious significance, and doens't apply to anyone. In our country it's a public holiday.
