users who start too many discussions - abuse?

United States
December 26, 2006 3:07pm CST
recently i have been sifting thru the new discussions and discussions with no responses and noticed some users who had started hundreds of threads. I was a little upset by this because that means they are just tossing out discussions left and right and not actually doing anything with them. i have had a couple discussions no one has responded to, but not 100. I am not going to name names, but does everyone else think this is wrong too? I clicked on one of the users. the had a rating of 282 but did not have any discussions that they had responded to, but I stopped looking thru after I reached about the 300th discussion. Is this something we can report as abuse?

There are many users like the ones you've mentioned. I'm not sure if they can be reported as abuse, but if we do myLot will surely review them. Mylot has come out with new rules now about discussions - they shouldn't be the yes/no type, no copying and pasting etc. So if the users you saw have done any of these things u can report them as abuse. I know we can do without many such people who don't deserve to earn anything!

i agree. thanks for your comment. i don't know that i have seen them copying and pasting, but i am pretty sure at least some of the discussions where yes/no or didn't make any sense at all. maybe if we report them for the rules they are breaking mylot will set up rules about these spam-like discussion starters so that you can't create a discussion until you've at least posted to someone elses. thanks.

The best way to "punish" them is to not respond. If you don't think it's a quality post, don't respond. that will let them know what you think of their posts. And it might make them think twice before posting something stupid. Or not.

Wow... someone who has a Rating of 282, but has never answered anyone else's posts. Wow. I know I have been a member of myLot now for just about 3 months. Yes, I have started a lot of discussions from time to time, but I know I go thru spurts when I post mine, and only a very few have over 100 for a Rating. I write on what I believe in or feel is Good to discuss and then go from there. I reply to a lot of posts from time to time as well. I Love myLot, and am very Glad to be here.

Is that really possible, to have a rating of 282 but has not even answered any discussions, hmmm something fishy don't you think? Sometimes good discussions get buried because of useless questions. I still post but at least I have more discussions that I respond to than discussions that I start.

yes. i find it very strange that this person has such a high rating without any replies. but unless there is something wrong with his profile, he hasn't responded to any. I really enjoy mylot as well and I appreciate all the people who make it better. it is too bad that there are a few like this his ruin it for everyone.

I respond to about 10 times or more the number of discussions that I start. It's much harder to respond to a question thatn to just post questions. I've noticed that some of the posters don't even go back and continue to respond or comment on the people's responses in their own thread. I only get a handful of responses to discussions that I've started so for meit is better to respond to others and post once in awhile with a new question. I think that mylot will eventually do something about the random posters that just post questions

I hope so. i too think it is frustrating if people don't bother to read the posts on their own discussions. thanks for the response.

I'm sure we're thinking of the same 2 or 3 people. There was one today that was just off the hook- he was posting a new thread every 10-15 seconds! I looked at his profile also, and the only things he had responded to were 1 or 2 word type discussions. He had no best responses, and he did not keep up with or respond to the comments in his disccussions. I was reporting him all day, as were a few other people (the newly formed MLPD, or MyLot Police Dept)!! Report the abuse, give a neg. rating. It's the only way to make this site work.

thank you very much. I agree with you. these topics aren't in any way quality. at least is they had taken the time to pose an intersting question that made sense i might let it go, but if you are posting a topic every minute and they are not good and you are not keeping up with them, I am sorry but that is abuse.

I think if you want people to answer some of your discussions then you must in return answer them. I have only been on this site a couple of days and I am still trying to figure out the best aspects of it and how to apporach different methods. I will often browse the disscussions and see if anything catches my interest. I also decided and this is just me is someone gives me a decent answer I will answer a couple of the discussions they have posted to return the courtesty they have given me. I also go through my answers and rate the really good ones...and I even rate some negative ones...and by negative everyone is entilted to there opinion...but im also not going to name names a couple people really pissed me off so i gave them a negative rating...but i appreciate the good responses...and by giving them a plus that actually generates their ratings on mylot...so if i get a quality answer or i see a particular user has answered a few of my discussions i am going to return the favor...or if someone requests to be my friend...ill try to answer some of theres....

I think this is a good strategy to have. then at least since this user isn't responding to any discussions people won't be looking to respond to his topics.

Now that I have seen someone doing it ya it really bothers me cause theres like 20 topics about nothing and I got to keep going through all these retarded ones to find a half decent one to responed to.

I agree. that is exactly why I am upset. the discussion that caught my eye to this particular user was called "do you like to multiply by the train" and the only text for the discussion was "9". obviously this person didn't even take the time to form a coherent question or even a real topic. and what killed me is that someone had responded to it.

I agree with you, it's a miracle if i manage to post more than 3 in a day, never mind in the space of a few minutes! lol! I really like to respond to other's discussions as well. I really hate seeing people churning out one rubbish topic after another.

thank you both. it is a shame that some people make it so hard to have a good discussion.

I have noticed this too. I wonder if they aren't being paid for these posts though because many of them are not meaningful discussions or offer any sound advice or knowledge they could pass on. I'm not sure about reporting it as abuse, you might want to check into that. Have a great day.

thanks that was what I was wondering. but with such a high rating, i am sure they are getting paid at least something.

it might just be that no-one is interested in their discussion. and surely they wouldnt make as much money from blank discussions as ones with actual comments (in terms of earnings) so i dont see much wrong with it!

we cant say that because even i started some discussions meaning fully in the topics in which iam interested but did not get any responses for some my discussions too.....and thats not my fault right? because i started a discussion of my interest and there ends my job till someone responds to. because if nobody is interested wat can i do, i cant force someone to respond in my discussion, it happens sometimes and sometime people are crazy to earn money so they start such discussions, we can never blame someone for a topic without discussions

but it is one thing is you start discussions on genuine topics and then also repsond to other peoples topics. but if you constantly are generating topics, most of them asking what clothes you wear or what time it is, then i think that is too much. i have started topics too with no response but at max i'v started less than 10 a day. i've seen users who start more than ten in an hour.

I agree, what's the point of posting large numbers of discussions at the one time, its totally selfish, surley its better to stagger them a few a day at the most. I've not posted anything yet, because I only want to contribute quality topics, and have time to respond to any replies that I get (if any!). Perhaps Mylot should have a limit on the number posted per day, week and month, with increasing amount allowed depending on the quality of the discussions, and also the number of replies each person making the most gives as well, I would suggest a minimum ration of 1 post to 5 replies made by each person.

I agree eskimo. it is selfish to start that many discussions at once. i have noticed users that have 2 or 3 discussions at a time on the most current "new discussion topics" page. I don't even know how that's possible as whenever I start a new discussion it ends up on the 2nd or 3rd page before I even have a chance to look for it.

I think this is quite an aberation. The purpose of this forum is to discuss extensively on a particular subject. But i also observed that some are just here rolling out discussion (one sentence discussions) almost every minute. these individuals never take time to respond or coment on any other discusions. I think this is not to good. I implore the officials at my lot to weight response/comments to discussions higher than creating discussion threads. Some discussions are just nothing of substance.

this is exactly why i have a problem with these quick generated topics. mylot should really do something about these topics that are one liners and aren't any good.

hmm very interesting. i am a new user..so just looking at the group dynamics. i see ur point, it is abuse as far as i am concerned. there is no point in flooding the system with unwanted junk.

i agree. especially today i have founf it very hard to find quaility topics to post to because every other one was a topic from the same 2 or 3 users who were just flooding the new discussions section with useless topics.

Yes, I have been watching people. In an eagerness to increase the rating and earn money, there are several people who pick up all silly topics and continuously post discussion topics. I respond to the discussion if the topic is qualitative and interesting. Silly ones are ignored.

hopefully if everyone avoids these topics that are bad then these users who abuse the system will either leave or be kicked out.

i think people sometime fail to realise thats it might just be better to respond rather than start a new discussion..and thats why observations such as urs can be made..and as with anything else there are two ways of looking at it..on u say that they are needless and theye should be removed but then somepeople just don't get responses too often and therefore start a lots of discussions..i think with time such people would mature..

hopefully, but it realy just gets my goat that they start hundreds of discussions a day and don't bother checking up on them or responding to other peoples topics. hopefully mylot will notice this and make them wise up a bit.

I am still fairly new here and I don't understand how everything works yet, but if no one is responding to their discussions do they still earn money? I can't figure out how some of these people can think up enough topics to start that many discussions with!

the thing is that they aren't really thinking up topics they are just posting discussions like "do you like..." or "what type of this do you..." it is sad and a waste of space.
