Survivor: Cook Islands.... What did you think?

United States

I have been a long-time fan of the CBS Show Survivor, and enjoyed watching again this past season in Cook Islands. This season, they started out having the four tribes split by ethnicity, thus setting off a lot of controversy. How did everyone feel that the show went? Was it respectful? Should CBS have avoided doing it like this? Or was it just another competition that was blown out of proportion? I am very interested in seeing how other fans of the show felt.

Although I thought it was an OK idea, at the same time I found it dumb. It really ended up making some people I know angry about the way things worked (suck as at the end how the latinos, blacks and asians were so happy to have removed all the white people). It really wasn't a social experiment because they split the tribes up into races. If they wanted to experiment, they should have said nothing about the fact that they had 4 races, and instead just sat back and let the tribes form on their own, and see who sides with who. If they had done that, we may have found different bonds. But since they started out by putting them in races, each race bonded with themselves (duh!) because they were grouped with each other and forced to work together, and therefore more likely to bond. If I had done the show, I would never have mentioned race to the players and instead said "pick your teams" to see what happens.

Heh Heh... you know what a good "social experiment" would have been... for them to split the tribes up into a rich/poor tribe based on money earned before they got to the island. Although a "pick your own teams" would have been interesting as well. They have done that one before though.

I really enjoy watching Survivor and I don't feel that the tribes being split by ethnicity in the beginning was a problem. It wasn't long until they were changed into two tribes anyway. I had predicted that Yul would win from the beginning, but toward the end I really wanted Ozzy to win because he was so physically adept. Ozzy wanted to go to the University and I would like to have seen him be able to do that. What can I say? I am a fan.

I thought for sure that after Yul "played" everyone that he stood no chance at winning, and when he did, it really surprised me. It must have been tough though, to be the third person receiving no votes up against these two very strong players.

I have watched Survivor quite a bit over the years. But, I didn't really get into it as much as most people did. I haven't seen Cook Island, but I think that's simply a ploy for ratings with the separating of races. Whether or not it was "disrespectful" would be up to the players themselves.

They all seemed intrigued/excited by the premise, and nobody ever said anything to the negative... or at least nothing was every shown to the public. It seemed like they were all fine with this "social experiement."

I would have to agree that it really showed how well everyone could work together. It is almost too long to have to wait for the Spring Season to finally make it on the air isn't it?!

i never actually looked at it this way. i don't have time to watch all the parts in a series, and i also see different series since i'm not from usa and my country is buying the rights to show survivor, but it's a pretty good show in my opinion. i really like it. it shows how people react when they are facing critical decisions. we all know that when a human faces a critical moment his reactions and atitude are very different from the moments when he's facing a regular situation. so i'm appreciating overall the quality of the show. i'd vote for it anytime anywhere.

It's good to see that there are fans outside of the U.S.!

Does anybody still watch Survivor? I haven't watched since my friend and former Sunday school teacher Tina Wesson won.

Yeah I still watch it, and I plan to continue watching it. It is interesting television in my opinion. :)

I still watch, but I usually catch a few episodes here and there. Then once it gets down to 8 people or so, I start watching again. The middle just doesn't interest me anymore! I'd rather watch big brother, now there's a show that's on 3 times a week and I will catch every episode!

I love Survivor as well and wish that I could have seen the Finale. I did not know it was going to be on that soon. I did not have a problem with the beginning with the grouping based on race as I knew it would not stay that way. They always break down the groups eventually and I enjoy seeing new twists to the game. It didn't seem to cause too many problems among the contestants on there and they seemed to get along fine.

Oh no!!! You didn't get to see the finale??? They threw in a brand new twist, where they had three people go in front of the jury instead of the normal two. I really liked it as something different from the norm.

When I first started watching this show I was kind of shockjed they put all races together like black with black and so on. I thought it was going to be abit weird with people but it seemed to work out good for that show. I think they just did that to bring in alittle more attention to the show.

Well the attention worked... it had more people watching than some of the previous years, and I think it has turned into good ratings that could help the show durvive even longer on television.

I wasn't a fan of the way that they hyped up the whole segregation thing this season. Maybe they did that to stir up some publicity in the beginning, who knows? I noticed that as the show went on, the groups merged and changed to make it almost like the other Survivor seasons. I really didn't like the idea though, as much as they tried to do it in a way that wasn't too offensive (though it may have been to others).

You are probably right that they used it to spark interest, and it seemed like just "the next thing" in their attempt to try new things each season. I thought it worked well, and didn't understand why so many people got so upset about it. It's a game.

To me this was the most enjoyable season I've seen yet. It didn't bother me when they broke people up along racial lines. I was curious to see how they worked with each other and then when apart how they work with the others. It seems people connnected on how they viewed to play the game rather than what ethnicity they were. I believe that's why the final four got so far in the game.

It was really nice how that final four was able to flip the game on its head. Interesting that none of them would have made it, if it weren't for that one crucial Tribal Counsil vote. :)

Personally what they should have done was keep Survivor to once a year. After the 3rd installment it was getting too boring. But I did like the All-Star season. I like Big-Brother because it's only on once a year. You really don't get bored of it. I hope they bring back PARADISE HOTEL!

Big Brother is only during the Summer, which I think really helps them, because there is not a lot of competition going for the same viewers.

I think reality television's executives are getting more and more desperate to make money. You can't have too much of a good thing.

Heh Heh... with some of the recent tries at Reality Shows, I would have to agree with you there. There was this Fox show after American Idol last year that really flopped. Then there are some thing like Celebrity Cooking that get pulled early due to low ratings. I think they will keep trying out new things just to see if something new will work!

well its just a show i think.. it should not be seen as racist or something.. entertainment should be treated as such..just entertainment.. in my opinion lol

That is a good way to look at it. It is just another show on television, and should not be taken as a slice of real-life, when a lot of the things we see are 100% controlled.

The twists and the new styles that they had impemented on this season is just part of the thing the we call "Strategy"...As far as i know its more than 10 seasons of survivor and CBS needs to find ways to keep the number ( i mean the number of viewers of the show)...and again i guess they've pulled it OFF...How about other survivor fans what can you say about the CBS moves to retain the shows' ratings?

For some reason I didn't really watch this time around. But I remember when they decided to do it this way. I really don't understand the reasoning behind it. I mean there is enough problems with racism in society without bringing it onto the TV purposly.

Its really great and one thing i like about it is that it lets us feel the untouchable issues of life and society as well as its really fascinating to know as to how things will go when a winner is chosen.

I though it was broadcasted respectfully. When I first heard they were going to divide the tribes up like that I was worried that it would be a racial war, instead it showed how many people with different etniticitys could get along. I enjoyed watching.

I've watched surviror since the begining. Cook Islands was not one of my favorites because of the split in ethnicity. They seemed to work it all out fairly well though. I was expecting to see more controversy, but cudos to all the tribe members except for a slip up or two
