I have a huge backyard it use to be an old blueberry field and the blueberry bushes are still there. Thats just an example of how big the land is my backyard. well I saw a couple of stray cats in the dead of winter eating the bird seed I put out for the birds and I felt sorry for them. so now I feed them everyday but they wont let me touch them still. My question to you is would you have fed them?

You have a pack of feral cats. They will most likely never let you touch them, and you really should not try to. They are what they are, and what they are is wild cats. I would still feed them. If you have a large pack on your property, you may want to contact the local animal shelter. They can put you in touch with volunteers and vets that will trap them, spay or neuter, and then release them back to the wild.

Spaying/neutering the cats will help to control the size of the pack. An excellent suggestion. My local animal shelter offers a feral cat program, but they won't come catch the animals, they expect you to do that, then bring the animal to them.

Yes I would and I have. I found a stray cat in the garden one day fast asleep on of the garden chairs, it was so skinny, I felt sorry for it. I started to feed it every day and it soon became a regular at the house inside and out. It was half feral as it would'nt let you touch it in certain places, like its tummy. Anyway one day it was sat at the door waiting to go out, I needed to move the cat to get the door open and as I approached it it leaped up on my arm biting and scratching me and hanging on my arm for what seemed like a minute or so. The blood was gushing down my arm and I needed to get a tetinous injection. I never saw the cat again, don't know if it knew what had done or what, but thats the story.

I live in the country and have feral cats as well. They spend most of the time in our barn, which is ok because we have no livestock. I supply them with food, water, litter boxes, and dog houses filled with hay. I have used a hav-a-hart trap to catch several and have them neutered/spayed. This summer 2 new litters showed up bringing our total to 16. They were all once very untouchable, the 5 kittens still are. I have found that after the others were neutered they became friendlier, though still cautious. Some have totally overcome their fears, some will tolerate petting but not picking up. Time will tell with the kittens. I will have to try to catch them soon.

There is no way that I could NOT feed them! I am also a feral cat feeder. I have an indoor cat myself, and he is spoiled to the max. But I have fed the ferals at each jobs where I have encountered them. I would suggest using a humane trap and attempting to spay/neuter them. I have done that as well. They will normally waive the fee (40-60 dollars), just to try to control the population. As for raccoons, I would feed them too. I have friends that get to entertain the nightly visitors, and it make sme so jealous. After all, my favorite animal is the raccoon. I am not so generous with the birds, though. I don't go out and buy seeds for them, but I do throw out read crumbs. Not sure if they eat it. But it's always gone the following day!

Thats what Im planning on doing this spring. I feed the birds and I use to feed the racoons but they are not coming around anymore and Im kinda glad because they fight outside I could hear them. I dont want them getting my poor outside cats. Thanks for advice that was nice of you.

Yes I would have fed them also. Those poor cats need love and one day they may trust you enough to let you pet them. A lady I take care of feeds birds, raccoons, squirels, deer, and stray cats. They dont come up to her but they will sit and look at her while she talks to them and puts food and water out for them. You are a special person to take the time to do this. God put them in your yard for a reason.

I have ended up feeding my neighborhood's cats (not to mention raccoons and other critters I'd just as soon not see on my porch!) because my husband is highly allergic to cat fur and our cat lives outside. His feeding dish is on my front porch and I see all kinds of animals snacking on it. It's gotten to the point where I only put food out there when he is right there to eat it. Then once he's gotten what he needs if the other animals want to have some I'm not going to stop them. I truly did once see three raccoons, one of them HUGE, hanging out on my front porch eating cat food! In the situation you described I'm sure I would have fed those cats too, even though it adds more mouths to feed to the list, because even if they won't let you touch them (yet), they will certainly be back for supper!

There is no question that I would have fed them. It is sad that people just drop off a cat to fend on its own. Have you tried to bring the food closer to your house? Coaxing them to come nearer to you. They may be so skiddish that they may never approach humans again. Maybe if you get a humane cage to catch them in. Then you can feed them and attempt to get them used to you.

Just be careful when you try and get near your feral cats .. seven cases of rabies were reported in Staten Island, New York State in Decemeber alone .. and I do believe rabies is common in most other US states

I sure would if I could afford it. If not, I would put table scraps out for them it's better than nothing. I have a cat that lives in my basement. I have been feeding him for months now. It won't let me near it either. I wish I could catch it so I could bring it in the nice warm house. That reminds me, I need to go feed it now. Maybe when it warms up you can call someone to come get them.

I have fed stray cats. I only suggest foing it if you don't mind all the neighborhood cats coming over. We had a stray come by a while back, and we started feeding him, hoping that he would eventually let us pet him. It worked. After a while, my husband got to where he could pet the cat if he stuck his hand out the door a little. Eventually, it got to where we could hold him and he became very lovable. Unfortunatly he recently disappered. So, yeah feeding strays has it's benefits if your a cat lover. But it can get expensive if there are very many....

Bless your heart dear, you are so loving and sweet. Yes, I would have done the same. They are creatures that are hungry. I just fed a bunch of wild rabbits and birds the other day. It's hard for them to find food in the winter. Keep up doing things like that, and you will be blessed over and over.

I am not really sure if I would have feed them or not. For one, they would likely still come around a lot and then you would be resonsible for feeding them, like they were your own cats. Of couse, if I had the extra money to spend on pet food, I probably would.

yes I think you are right to feed them. Poor things must be very hungry if they are eating birdseed! If I were you I would call your local animal shelter and ask for advice. They may come out, catch them and neuter them so they can't breed anymore, there is a big problem with too many cats/kittens. I have 2 lady cats and they are much happier since they are both neutered, no more kittens!
