Where do you get your inspiration to write poems?

I was writing a poem in this post about poetry, and it made me think of this. I was wondering how others get inspired to write their poems? Is it personnal experiences? Because for me, very few of my poems are about my life. Most of them, i wrote thinking of several issues in the world today, like death penalty, loss of a loved one, child abuse, death in general, childbirth, weddings, etc. And a lot of my friends, who also write poetry, always wondered, how the heck i write these if i've never lived through such events. Just wondering what you guys think.

Similiar to you, I get ideas for writing from thinking about things, but most often I write what I believe or feel, and my writing leans much more to personal experience. The beauty of writing is that you are not limited to experience... creativity opens the door for anyone to write about anything.

I also write poems somtimes. What inspires me is my emotions.Sometimes i feel hurt and i express my way better on paper. So i write a few sentences(Make a rough copy)Than i play around and compose a poem)My poems are mostly about love and life. Some are sad poems depending on how i feel.Others are joyfull.Unlike you most of my poems are based on things i went through or fell.Happy New year (We got snow at least for new year)

I do that too sometimes, jot down whatever's on my mind, and later on, create a poem with it. It's a good way to go. Happy New Year to you too! Yes, finally, snoooow :)

My poems are written from the heart. It can be wriiten about someone I know or knew, life's experiences or as I call them life's lessons learned, orsomething someone else has gone through that I know. A Mother' Cry is one of them I wrote that was a true life experience as was Cry of the Heart. I sent a letter to the editor online in our little town's weekly newspaper to let them know one of my poems was in the finals for their contest at poetry.com and invited them to go and do a search for my name as the poet. Also told that some of the poems might step on people's toes in this town but that I wrote from the heart.

I've had a few poems on poetry.com also, and have been invited for the past 4 years to go to their annual poets' society convention and symposium, but i've never actually been. They had to give me this award, and i would've had to read my poetry in front of thousands of other poets. Don't think i could've done that anyway, wayyy too embarassing!
