When Bowl Games were Bowl Games

Today is the biggest day for college football. It is the day when most bowl games are played. Is it just me, or has the post-season gotten out of hand? I remember when it used to be the Citrus Bowl, Orange Bowl, Independence Bowl, Gator Bowl, etc. Now you have corporate sponsorship of all bowls. The Outback Bowl? The CompUsa Bowl? The MPC Computer Bowl? Are there too many bowls and does it take away from the prestige of going to a bowl with so many qualifying for "bowl games?"

I always thought the Rose Bowl was the biggest one....i think college football has got out of hand, they really need to start a BCS tourny....

I'm down with a wournement style of playoffs. And think how much extra money they could squeeze out of the whole deal!

I think that the major ones are still more popular and more prestigious. One of my friends went to the Rose Bowl today. It's not far from us, but is a huge event. I think tickets were over $400. Sponsors help to defray the costs. I know for racing, my dad used to own a dragster and only had a couple sponsors, all small companies or they didn't pay a whole lot. It costs over a million a year to run one, and needless to say, we don't have that kind of money! So he sold it when I was very young. But with large corporate sponsors, he could have kept at it.

I know, but some how it just seems so....wrong. The NCAA is whoring for the dollar. I guess you have to do what you have to do.

Bowl games today remind me of a line from The Incredibles -- when everyone's super, no one is. I've stopped watching bowl games pretty much because the NCAA has allowed them to become so cheapened. They are all about a buck now.

I believe that the more football we have the better off we'll be. Perhaps some of the "lesser" sports will be pushed off the wayside. I'd rather watch football than the other sports on tv.
