How do you check if you have diabetes? How much is the test? I don't have much money to go to the doctor, but if i knew how much the test is, i could just ask them for that.

Hi vetsmom_rgv! I'm diabetic and I've had for quite a while before I found out. I noticed that I was always thirsty and I would urinate often. And then suddenly my weight dropped by 20 lbs. This got me worried so I went to see my doctor and she gave me a blood sugar test and that's how I knew. The test is not that expensive. But if you find out that you're diabetic you might have to buy a glucometer, around US$100, and the strips used to test your blood sugar is quite expensive, like US$1 per strip. See your doctor first just to be sure. And follow his orders so you won't develop complications. Good luck!

Mee too i've been a diabetic for over fifteen years, i wished i lost weight, but like i said different symptoms.. The test machine you can get for free from bayer it's the strips that you have to buy, if you don't have enought money to buy the larger quantities just get the smaller ones, you might be able to get that free at the clinic to or low cost.

I had mine diagnosed just a couple of months ago. I was hospitalized for having fever for four days. I was checked for Dengue & typhoid but all were negative when I was tested for FBS it was then that they dignosed my blood sugar level was a bit high about 9 where normal values was 3-6 something. A month ago my FBS went down to 4 whicn normalized already i was given a medicine avandamet. I am wondering if I would need to have those glucometer now that my glucose levels are within normal limits?

checking yourself is not recommended. Just because your blood sugar is high one time, it doesn't mean you have diabetes. Just because it's not hih doesn't mean you so not have it. Doctors measure your blood sugar, look for signs of glucose (sugar) in your urine, and measure a test called a HgbA1C. It depends on your situation and symptoms. If you know a good physician, she will be sensitive to your financial situation as well as the need to protect your health. I would suggest you gie them a call.

sorry for all the typos. Also, I meant to say it is not recommended to try and diagnose yourself. If you do have diabetes, then checking your blood sugar regularly is a very good thing.

Rick great answer. To the original poster, I don't know where you live but here we have plenty of free clinic's that do it for you. I would have myself checked. Funny I tell you to do it, but I am afraid to have mine checked.

There are certain signs and symptoms of diabetes, excessive thirst, constantly having to urinate, feeling tired and weak, and when your blood sugar is low you feel very shaky and faint, disorientated. Not all persons have these symptoms, you can go a long time before you have just one. The next time you take physical ask the doctor to take a blood sample to check for diabetes, or go to a free clinio..

Please get the test as soon as possible if you have just one of these symptoms. Increase in urination Increase in thirst Loss of weight (not dieting) Hunger Craving for sweets Loss of energy Blurring vision Cold feet (even when its not cold out) They don't call diabetes the "Silent Killer" for nothing. It has become the fastest growing disease in the USA There are 14.6 million people who have been diagnosed and 6.2 million people who have not been diagnosed. This number grows daily. If you are on Medicare your test for diabetes is free. If you are on Medicare you can join Humanna Gold and get your meds as well as your meter/test strips free. I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was in my first car accident. Otherwise I would still not know I am a diabetic. Things really do happen for a reason. Wishing you the best of health

if diabetes is hereditary or runs in your family it is really a good way to have your blood sugar check. there are several test that will confirm if you have diabetes and i guess the best is the fasting blood sugar or FBS wherein you will not eat or drink eight hours prior to the said test. a blood sample will be taken from you but only a small amount.i think it will not cause you that much. the rates actually differ in hospitals.
