Sounds incredible but there are guestimated to be over 10 million, billion ants on Planet Earth !! That's 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 ants (counting in UK amounts, a UK billion being different to a US billion!) .. all weighing in at a flippin' hefty 2 billion pounds approx It is estimated there are more ants than there are birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians put together! Most ants fight with their jaws .. but one very special ant from Malaysia fights by exploding it's abdomen in it's enemies face ...

I'm not a fan of ants, They can be found almost everywhere, except probably at the polar caps, but you never know there may be a species of Eskimo Ant, lol Red and black ants are most common in the garden. Its the red ants that tend to sting, while black ants are less aggressive. You may also find yellow ants in orchards or old pasture – they make large grass-covered humps. Undisturbed colonies can survive for many years. Ants can be, literally and metaphorically, irritating, but they are not a major pest. They have some beneficial characteristics; they eat small insect pests and have a part to play in the recycling of plant and animal wastes in the ground and in compost heaps.

Ant feeding on Honey - Ant
Perhaps the only creature that has become extinct on the planet earth by the invasion of the worst of all pests, the Human beings, is the ant community. perhaps i may not join many here in oppsing this little wonderthough they invade me also many times a year. I have read the last trace of the culture and civilization in the planet would be left with only this tiny living beings. You Know ants have a well organised administration system of their own. They rare "Cows' and milk them.they have hierarchy and we need to learn a lot from them. I cannot give a linkhere since most of these stuff i read on books. Somebody can help here.let us not curse these poor creatures.

I think they all came to my house for a holiday last summer. I had so many ants in the kitchen it was unbelieveable. It drives me crazy especially because I am a freak about keeping the floors and counters clean from food or crumbs. I don't know what they wanted but they left as quickly as they came. lol

Ants enrich the soil when they process their food. They can help recycle decomposing materials. Some ants help in the spreading of seeds. Ants help the environment by consuming unwanted plants. Some ants eat harmful insects. I guess we need them.

I wonder how they came to that estimate, it would be very hard to count a nest of ants let alone count them on that scale...

Busy like an ant again Toots, eww in reading that, it makes me want to scratch. I hate ants, we had an ants nest a couple of years back and I was out boiling kettle after kettle after kettle of hot water mixed with washing up liquid to get rid of the horrid little critters. Thanks er for sharing.

Wow sounds really interesting to hear so much about ants. Ants though being one of the smallest cretures have been very sucessful both in evolutionary perspective as well and in their numbers. they have occupied all the places of the world and in more numbers when compared to humans. I find these the most interesting of all creatures.
